They aren't just on council estates crispy,there is a very affluent area about 10 minutes walk from me and the gangs are all drinking,smoking and swearing on corners,its very intimidating to walk past them because they all stare and swear at you.

What you are proposing seems to be execution by proxy. I doubt very much if you have any military service yourself otherwise you wouldn't support putting good soldiers in danger by making them babysit this scum

When they've finished their service do you really think they'll "intergrate" back into society????
I think they dserve a much worse fate, such as experimentation for new drugs etc

The British army is one of the best in the world, if your proposal went through that would no longer be the case in a very short time.

The British Army doesn't want them, they need professional, responsible people in the armed forces, would you like one of those yobs to be responsible for the safety of his colleagues, in a war situation ? I know I wouldn't trust them with a rifle !!!!!

I live in cyprus and at 18 the boys have to do army service for 2 years, so like everyone else my brother did it when he turned 18 and from a very mild mannerred, great sense of humour...his manner turned a lot more aggressive and he just suddenly thought he was the big man, acting in a chauvinistic behaviour, that he never had done before. I was reading an article the opinion of one of the oldest men in britain thought about bringing back national service, and was expecting a very old fashioned point of view, but what he said is the most sensible thing ive heard on this issue, he said that back in his day he had his mum waiting at home to spoil him and just society in general has changed so much today, most families are split up, kids are given too much freedom...its just such a different era.

Im sure you probably will give me the thumbs down for this answer, but all im saying is bringing in compulsary national service wont be a miracle solution for yob culture in britain, im sure it would work on many people, but others could turn out even worse thinking there invincible with the training theyve had....i think it will take years and years to sort out the problem with yobs as it wasnt dealt with properly for so many years, first of all for me would be stricter sentences, kids under 16 know they wont go to jail so arent scared of authority and as far as im concerned that is all down to the parents...enough of blaming schools, police and goverment...where are the parents when these youths are commiting crimes, if kids aint got respect for their own family, theyre not going to show respect to no one.

Ive got a better idea than yours anyway...What if the goverment stopped giving council flats to single mums? Percentage of single mums are brilliant let me just get in first, but we all know people or of people that at 16 or so that have said the only reason they got pregnant was so they could get a council flat.

For those 16 year old who have just left school, a spell in the military on national service would give them a sense of pride, self discipline and career prospects, it would give them decent work experience and qualifications before they left to go to uni or get work, and it would just teach them how to live and survive as an adult and a productive member of society!

This works in Germany, where everyone is required to do a period of national service in either the military, or in the public/caring sector (nursing homes/teaching assistants, etc.)

This would be one of the best things to happen to this country in a long time if it came in.

Couldn`t agree more with your sentiments, the trouble with national service or prison is that they come out better equipped to commit crime, the only thing about Iraq is that a few of them will get killed, I live on a council estate and I`m sick of the scum.

Unfortunately we have always had unruly teenagers hanging around housing estates causing trouble and mischief but a lot of this is failure by our local councils to stop building these ghettos as they are fully aware of what they are creating..Even the police are reluctant to patrol these areas at nightime and now we have multi ethnic gangs it makes you wander wether they should be left to grow up like there parents.have and to be called the scum of the earth of wich they are.

No. The Forces are a disciplined body trained to a high standard. Due to cuts perpetrated by successive governments they are now below the strength required to carry out all the jobs thrown at them. The last thing they need is to be forced to waste time training a bunch of idiots who, in the vast majority of cases, will never be of any use.

Basically Gordon Brown has more serious issues on his mind at the moment. E.g, when he's next meeting with his best friend George Bush, and what present to buy for him.

Have you thought this out? Instead of having disorganised physically unfit yobs you would have healthy yobs who really knew how to fight! When Nat. Service was in use Britain was a very different country, people were largely polite with each other and there was a general respect for the law. That isn't so now, and it will be even more untrue tomorrow. Get used to it; in ten or twenty years you will look back with nostalgia to today, these will be 'The good old days!'

I have my own proposal. Mainly it's for smackheads rather than just yobs but the two tend to be interchangeable where I live. What I would like is for all of them to be stuck on a ship in the middle of the North Sea. Supply them with one car stereo between the lot of them. Then let them all nick it off each other and see how they bloody well like it. We could even film it all and put it on Channel 4 instead of Big Brother.

if you watched the program "bad lads army" you would see how brilliantly national service was for the blokes involved they all said it changed them. some members of the government must have seen it . they just cant be bothered, they never have to live next door to the scumbags, i do. this is why from now on i will only ever vote bnp

Hi, we were on about this yesterday I wouldnt say put them in the army, but certainly stick them in some sort of army boot camp, it they have a criminal recoerd and are being sent down to a young offenders then how long they have been sent down for is how long they should be in boot camp for, and there is no crying to mammy for suport when they have to clean the floor with a tooth brush there in there and there is no getting out for good behaviour either.

They get away with everything now adays someone steels they get 5 years a chav beats someone up and they get off with it, and its only when they beat 5 more poeple up the get sent to a young offenders for 4 months, Its pathetic.

I know someone who is in this situation and it wont change them, so he shold be sent somewhere like a boot camp where there is no getting out until you have done how long you are suppose to be in there for, apprantly if he is good he will get out in 2 months, and like that is going to of changes him.

The law today is stupid and it needs sorting.

Bit of a sweeping statement this. Council house yobs! Many come off private estates and so-called good families who throw the teenagers out onto the streets "for a bit of peace and quiet". Even PRINCE HARRY has caused trouble! They are found in all sections of society, whether is be working,middle or upper-class. They can be worse if they think Daddy can buy them out of trouble. So come on be fair ALL Yobs should be given conscription and made to face up to their behaviour. So don't label one section of society it occurs in all. (By the way I DON'T live in a council house either). Just trying to be fair.
