Shouldn't the Navy have a group who could.......?

So I'm watching the news this morning, and apparently the hostage Captain that's being held by Somali pirates made a break for it a few hours ago. He slipped out the back door of the covered lifeboat and made a break for it. He swam some distance from the lifeboat, but the Navy ship was too far away to do anything other than watch the pirates retrieve him from the water.
So I'm thinking...
Wouldn't it be nice if the U.S. Navy developed an elite group of warriors to deal with situations on Sea, Air, and/or Land? That would be awesome! And it would be even better if those guys could be deployed within 24 hours to anywhere in the world-like a situation where a U.S. Citizen was being held hostage by terrorists? That would be more awesome! And if those guys somehow were trained in underwater operations so that they could approach and intercept (un-noticed) a captain that swam away from his attackers, and then pop up and shoot the crap out out of the terrorists? That would be doubley, WOWsy, SUPER awesome!
And if these elite warriors had the training to shoot really well, and be able to make split-second decisions while facing threats...well, I've just pee'd my pants in how MEGA SUPER-DOOPER, WHOPPINGLY awesome that would be!
But, apparently that hasn't been thought of before...because the captain was swimming alone out there in the big blue sea. At least until the pirates rowed over to him and got him back out of the water...
I'm thinking maybe the captain was a little disappointed also. Additional Details Hey Gugliamo, he isn't even president in my book. He's spent way too many $$$$
keeping his birth certificate from coming to light.

Yeah the SEALs should have done something a long time ago. Seriously it's four pirates on a lifeboat that's dead in the water. But now the news is reporting that other pirate ships with more hostages are coming to the aid of the pirates and more U.S. warships or headed toward the scene as well. With more pirate ships with hostages on the scene I don't see how the SEALs can do anything now. They missed their chance. |

But you forgot one thing, some months ago
The pirates threaten to kill the hostages if any nations' military try to deploy its troops on the hijacked ship |

The Seals would easily take care of it, but they are busy with real threats. Navy Seals, Army Delta Force, and Marine Recon Rangers are not associated with civilian targets unless they are heads of state, i.e. ambassadors and other dignitaries. They focus primarily on military operations and troops.
If the governments wants to stop the pirates they would, and probably do allow, the arming of ships at sea. At the beginning of the Iraq War I remember seeing the armaments of Merchant Marine ships. They had Mark 19 automatic grenade launchers and M2 50 cal machine guns manned at all times. A small speed boat with AK47s and maybe RPGs would be a little threat at a distance.
I suspect that some companies do not want armed men aboard because they are owned by granola munching, open-toed sandal wearing hippies. Then they have to pay the ransom, too bad for them. If you operate in that area you should have arms, or contract a company like Black Water security to bring on arms and mercenaries. I suspect that many ships do have such resources, but you don't read about them sinking Somali's in the newspapers. |

Do you suppose that such a specialized group might already be fully committed in Iraq, Afghanistan and the GWOT? |

They do have, they are called Navy Seals. Our government feels sorry for the Pirates, so they are trying to work something out to save their lives. |
