The surviving pirate had actually abandoned ship which is what allowed the shoot to happen. The remaining 3 pirates had become very agitated and began shooting in the air. Negotiations had gone south. All 3 happened to show themselves simultaneously which was essential to ensure the safety of the hostage. Range I understand was something around 200 meters, at night in heavy seas. All 3 men apparently fired simultaneously. They had to have been laying on that deck for hours. Extremely impressive no matter how you slice it.

A big navy ship doesn't rock as much as you would think, and yes they are also EXTREMELY good shots.

This is how they it:
a) they are US Navy SEALs.
b) it was good shooting but it was under 100 yards away, that is a marksmanship shot NOT a sniper shot.
c) the waves weren't choppy, they were somewhat bobbing.
d) even if it was in the dark they had equipment that made it easier.

At that distance and conditions I know several people that could make that shot, though I can't say I'd put a life in their hands like were in the SEALs'.
They left that guy alive because we captured him, not because we were pitiful of him.
