The government that existed in 2003 called Iraq is no longer there. Iraq of 2007 is a different country with a different government. We are there assisting them in the transition by providing security to allow the political process to proceed and killing as many terrorists as we can during our stay.

You're just as original for asking this question, as are the countless guttersnipes piping up with "oil!" at a lazy attempt at an answer.

We did not invade Iraq because of 9-11, nor was that ever suggested by anyone but morons who can't even read their own biased newspapers. Iraq DID have WMD. It's found all the time, and is used all the time by insurgents there. Chemical weapons classify as WMD. Hence, an excellent reason for going there... not to mention freeing millions of Iraqis from Saddam. But, of course, I'm sure you've personally met as many Iraqis who were directly affected by Saddam's rule and have heard their side of the story as I have, haven't you? Oh--and I'm sure you've actually BEEN to Iraq, too; how else could you possibly deem yourself such a worthy source of expertise on the issue? Surely no one with a brain would be arrogant enough to deem themselves an expert on this issue from only having been spoonfed rubbish from American news reporters and self-serving politicians...

Do we know all the in's and outs of the Iraq War? No, we know that our country chose to vote in a president who is the commander in chief. According to the constitution he sanctioned the use of force after a decade of policing the country from the air. Did they have wmd's? Yes, they did however, they were not what we expected...they were weapons, which the US gave in aid during the Iran/Iraq war of the 80's and/or purchased. These were chemical warfare weapons.

The reason we are still there is to police the nation of a divided Iraq. If we leave then more civil factions will war with eachother and turn into a "somalia" of sorts. If we stay, then more casualties will be accounted for in US personelle. It's a catch 22. The best thing to do is to create a strategy limiting our casualty rate, while containing the Iraq situation. Just force and presence will cause more destruction...we need to moderate the containment of the area and transition the police powers directly yo the democratic government as quickly as possible,...but our presence there will remain for decades most likely...one way or another.

Useing your premise, that were no terrorists in Iraq before we invaded, is like saying people are running into a burning building instead of away from it. If they were not there before, Why are they there now? doesnt make sense to engage a stronger military force if one can hide from them....

Youre going to hear the word "oil" mentioned a bunch in all the responses, therefore those people are morons, the real reason of course is, there was a terrorist dictator in control of Iraq at the time we invaded, so your question itself is idiotic, weapons werent found, but that had 8 years when Clinton was in power to build and hide wmd's because he didnt follow through with santioned weapons inspections, and when Bush sent Blix and the inspectors over, they were told they werent allowed to search certain areas, not to mention all the wmd's that were used on Kurds and other Iraqis and Iran in the early 90's and late 80's. Saddam didnt become a nice guy, so the War in Iraq is justified, regardless of what the spineless liberals and non americans think, they just dont like Bush so they try to bring up as many BS facts as possible as to why the war is wrong, and when they are met with proof that is credible as to why it is a just war, they cower down and bring up "OIL!!!" but in reality, we know the truth, we took a terrorist out of power and killed him, and have done much more since this war started.

First of all, "terrorists" have been all over the middle east for hundreds of years. Your telling me they were never in Iraq until we showed up there? Well, they were. I know where your trying to go with this, but people need sources and facts. The fact is that 9/11 was an inside job and it was just an excuse to fight, because Bush's companies that he supported needed more government contracts. A lot of moeny has disappeared under the table because of this whole thing and no one will admit it.

OIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!... Oil is the lifeblood for our way of life. We need oil and the next few generations will be constantly at war to secure it. Without, cheap, oil our way of life is doomed. It's only a matter of time, but as long as we elect fighters and continue to believe the BS they feed us we will be at war for oil. Though I doubt ANY politician will ever admit it.
