Soldiers, I have a question for you?
|
First of all, I want to say "THANK YOU". I know many of you feel you're just doing your duty and a formal act of appreciation is not necessary, but I firmly believe that if I value my freedom and way of life, I should thank a soldier (and a vet, too).
My question actually pertains to notes, cards, letters, and misc. gifts that we here in the states send out through various organizations to you guys (and gals, sorry ladies) overseas. First of all, do ya'll actually receive these items? If so, how are they normally distributed and do you normally write back to the individual(s) if they've included contact information? Also, just out of curiosity, do you still keep in contact with them?
I'm just curious because we've participated in a few "drives" (Shoeboxes for Soldiers and an organization that was through my daughter's school who's name escapes me but I think it was the Wounded Warrior organization) and we've never received a response (not that we really expected one.....I see that ya'll are kinda busy over there LoL).
Once again: THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY!!

Thank you and your daughter for the support.
My unit received quite a few packages from supporters during the holiday seasons. Other than that we did get letters here and there. In my platoon we had a soldier that his mother was a teacher so they already knew we were already getting letters.
We had a general area we left them in for soldiers to answer. We did answer every single one. I'm sorry if you don't get a personal response but trust me we are very thankful for your support.
I have stayed in contact with a few people. I do admit though I usually break contact because I'm horrible at writing and keeping in touch unless it is by email. |

Yes, we get them. However, a lot of times you never actually get just one thing. The items are usually distributed among who needs what. So you can send a care package full of 5 things, and 5 different people have 1 thing from that item.
You have to keep in mind there is actually an abundance of items flowing in from the states in most Camps/Bases. When I was there, there was no way you couldn't get your hands on boxes of Girl Scout cookies and there was more Starbucks coffee per base than a college campus.
If you wish for a response, there are a few agencies that have specific pen-pal services with lists of Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines that wish to have a pen pal over in the states. It is true, some people are just way too busy. Things get lost easily over there due to everyone living together in tent cities. So maybe they intend to write you back but lose your stuff (sandstorms don't help either).
Also, a lot of people spend their free time just catching Z's or if they can talking with their family. Hope this helps! |

Thanks for th e gifts, yes when I was in Korea, I got many cards I wrote five people back and got no response, so I never did that again when I was in kuwait, in Kuwait the boxes of STUFF were all open and the soldier could take what they needed, kind of pick and choose and take as much as you could carry with you and ther e was a lot of stuff. some of the stuff I could buy at the PX, but why buy it when you could get it for free and save money when they came in t he boxes, it was great. |
