Solider in AIT having knee problems.?

My wife is in AIT at Ft. Sam Houston for 68W. She is having knee pain/problems which is effecting her ability to train on a day to day basis. She has gone to sick call and all they have given her is motrin and told her to ice her knees. The problem is still there. I think it is from the stress of basic and it is all catching up with her.

My question is how should she go about dealing with her injury? They put her on profile, but she still has march and stand in formation which aggravates it. Aside from this she is doing well in AIT. She does not want to get out.

That is pretty much all they can do. While standing and (some) marching is going to seem to aggravate the problem, she is still healing during her time on profile. Within a month if some progress is not made, then maybe something else needs to be looked at. Shin splints/knee joint pain is TERRIBLY common in AIT when someone has never put their body through that stress before. She will come out of it stronger, I assure you.

I guess it depends on the knee problem. If she wasn't so active before, her muscles and tendons are just getting used to the new stress. Time can usually help with these issues as muscles build to help support the joint.

If it is something that is persistent and does not resolve over time, she may have a big issue and may end up being discharged, which is a shame!

That's the military cure for everything, 800mg Motrin and ice. Tell her to just push through it and hope that it gets better. Tell her to stretch and massage when she gets the chance and keep at it. That's all she can really do aside from going on LimDu, and risk getting discharged.

**She may want to hit up her Doc and see if she can't get some sort of physical therapy as well while she is on limdu.
