I kept reading it over and over, paper after paper. When you ignore a crises away from your shores it unfortunetly ends up in your own backyard some time as well. We learned it from Afghanistan, left and forgotten just to see Al Qaeda plan their attacks from there. Now in Somalia, ignored and abandoned we are now saying what few Somali militia has been doing to their own people for a long time. When the international community ignores crises, it is usually the international community that will pay for that consequences. All these hijackings in the Indian Ocean are done by the same Somali gunmen/militia who has been holding hostage the Somalis in Somalia since '91. A militia that we failed to defeat in Operation Restore Hope, and when left Somalia showed them we left them in charge of Somalia.
Today, it is NOT only Somalis suffering by the hands of these miltias, it is also the international community also suffering. Don't you think it is time to slow down that food shipment to Mombasa, Kenya and divert it to Mogadishu, feed the population in Mogadishu so they know the international community is doing everything to help them and fight the people who kept them hostages since '91.

I agree. I've posted this answer in some of the questions that have been raised ever since the hijacking happened. But unfortunately it's not been a popular answer. And this to me indicates that there are people STILL in denial about the things going on in Somalia.
I'm going to try to make it as short as possible. Somalia is EVERYONE'S fault. And EVERYONE will pay for that fault. It's only a matter of time.
These people have had backs turned on them time and again. No one wanted to help them when the terrorists, warlords and now pirates were running amok.
I know I'm going to get but America tried and so did Ethiopia - by physical presence that is. Troops were actually sent in by both countries at one time or another.
In the case of America, people cried bloody murder when soldiers were killed. What was expected? They're soldiers, and soldiers die. What should have happened was that it should never have happened on such a disastrous level. I think there was much underestimation of the 'skinnys.' A hasty withdrawal followed. And that gave the warlords even more power. They thought they were invincible.
Enter Ethiopia. With unchecked rampaging these warlords took over the whole country and even started talking about 'uniting the five Somali states.' Meaning the ethnic Somalis living in Kenya, Ethiopia, Puntland/Somaliland and Djibouti. And they wanted to take the first step against Ethiopia.
Ethiopia invaded and chased them out of government and out of country. The war was won. But then the elcted government asked for support and the short-term war changed into a two-year training and support misson.
During these two-years, instead of helping to make the government better, the world was smiling about the audacity of a third-world country 'invading' another nation. Ethiopian troops were portrayed as the bad guys. The Ethiopian government asked all that would listen for help in stabilising the weak government, to no avail.
So, now these people are running around amok hijacking ships left and right and the whole world wakes up and acts surprised.
Sometimes I woder if there are some who really don't want peace to come to Somalia. I can't help but think that there are some who take advantage of the no-man's land for shady activities. Are there people that gain from the suffering of the Somalians?
