Some navy questions.?

which type of navy ship visits the most ports. Although travel isn't the reason i want to join, it will definitely make the decision easier. also what is a typical day living aboard a ship (work wise and any other time). is all your free time spent sleeping? what would you consider the best job to have if you could choose? feel free to try to talk me out of it. I am not thinking of this as a life long career, only the minimum obligation. Additional Details how many hours a day do you work?
and about the types of ships - getting ahead of myself or not, I would appreciate an answer. jeez.

A smaller vessel, like a frigate, or destroyer, visit more ports than aircraft carriers. Most ports out there cannot accommodate large ships, but small vessels can dock almost anywhere.
On another note, a smaller ship can offer you more experience ship wise along with a more sense of teamwork. In a larger ship you are more likely confined to whatever your rate is, you won't get to know everyone. |

You are jumping ahead of yourself on looking at ships. First you need to fine a rate.... what you will qualify for in regards to rate, will influence what ship(s) you may be on. Not all your free time is spent sleeping, unless you choose to use your time to. Your work schedule will also be according to your rate. Needless to say, choose your rate and choose your fate! |

At sea you should expect to work a minimum of 12 hours per day, 7 days a week...... 84 hours a week. However, you'll find there's stuff that needs to be done when you're off duty.... qualifications, training, maintenance, etc... So, figure 100 hours a week at sea.
In port you'll work 40 hours a week (Monday-Friday 8am to 4pm) but you'll have duty days (1 day out of each 4 or 5 days). On your duty day you'll stay on-board the full 24 hours and stand at least 1 watch (usually 4 hours long).
There is no "typical day" at sea or in port other than the time meals are served.
Aircraft carriers tend to have fewer port visits so I'd stay off them if at all possible. If I could do it all over again I'd go in as an STG (Sonar Tech Surface) and get stationed on a Destroyer or Frigate. |

Personally I'm on a frigate and on my next deployment we are in port more than @ sea (carat cruise) the hours are pretty long at sea and the work isn't easy but you get to have fun and learn just about anything you want from other divisions I am a gunners mate and love the rate! I wouldn't do anything else personelly |
