Sould United States citizens have the right to decide whether our country goes to war?

I need 2 no for a project.

ArmyWifey
No -- absolutely not! DO you know how many wars we'd be in then? Johny hates Mexico so let's go there, Suzy's mad at Canada, Billy's got a beef with Africa, etc.....

The founding fathers set things up correctly and we need to stick with them. Just because you or say your neighbor is dissatisfied doesn't mean we should scrap the whole thing! To many people want to change around the constitution, etc without looking at the facts of how things actually work, or how long it's been working well, comparing system's with the rest of the world.

and by the way the US is a democratic republic not a democracy .....

No as others have stated you already did choose by voting.

We do..indirectly...in the people we elect to Congress and the President

Matt L
No, because most citizens haven't had the training or experience to make such a decision.

No, I don't think that the general public should decide whether or not we go to war.

The average citizen does not have the specialized training, experience and access to classified intelligence (as in spy reports, not IQ levels), foreign relations, foreign policy, economics and especially military strategy needed to make an informed decision.

Subhuman23
This is why we elect officials.

TyranusXX
No not directly we shouldn't! Just what we would need , even more MOB rule!

Not directly. There are so many uninformed citizens out there...

Not to mention, just imagine how long it would take to poll EVERY eligible US citizen. Also the question rises: when do you stop polling people and take the vote? Because not everyone is going to even respond.

We do have a way to decide, though very indirectly. We vote in members of Congress, and THEY decide on war or not. The way I see it... if someone can't put their faith into a representative's potential decisions, then they should run for Congress themselves instead of claiming they can't do anything about it.

well, you already did decide, if you voted. You also decided if you didn't vote and could have. got it?
in a democracy, everybody gets what the majority wants. If you're not part of the majority, ooops - you're screwed.

dangacat
no. especially cause half the enemy is already in your country so which way do you reckon that would swing

B. Wags
In a way they already do by electing government officials. The point of electing officials is to have these people make these desesions for us.

Now should the US Populations be able to vote for us going to War? No way! There is no way that the US Population could ever be fully informed of all the facts prior to going to war. There would be classified information that could not be leaked due to national security that might play a big role in the desision process.

There is no way that the US would ever declassify such information that is used in order to determine that military force is the action required to determine an out come of an event.

Other issues include setting up balots for voters, what time line do you set for voters when something is time critical, how do you make the public education aware of the entire situation ontop of their already busy work schedule and expect them to make a sound desision.

As a member of the armed services, I do not want the average person to vote if I go to war. I want the Commander and Chief to make that call after reviewing all the facts and ensureing that this is the right course of action for America.

RTO Trainer
They already do.

N O, that situation should be left up to the Department of Defense and not to civillians.

We do have the right to decide! It's called a vote. The politicians the American public votes for (or not) makes those decisions for us. It's the American way, and one I have proudly served in our Armed Forces to protect all of my adult life.

You also might want to check into grammar for your project, too; you might need "2" "no" that as well.

jmom
maybe not a direct vote, but in a true democracy, I think the president should go with the majority opinion( so I think we need a vote on something that is that important and will affect all our lives)

YES. When war is declared, it affects us ALL. Some might say that our vote for president is that decision - having the faith in that person to make the right decisions. But since I didn't get my choice the last 2 elections, I am re-thinking that concept.

yes. theoretically we already do. But thanks to loopholes and a disregard for the constitution many decisions are made w/o a proper vote.
