Steps of becoming a sniper?

Your in luck! I just had a guy ask me about this a few weeks ago.
Requirements:
Male, volunteer
0300-Infantry MOS.
E2 - E7(No officers).
expert rifleman.Minimum Requirements:
having a second class or higher swim qualification.
a first-class score on their Physical Fitness Test (PFT).
eye sight correctable to 20/20.
not colour blind.
no office hours.
Non-Judicial Punishments within 6 months.
qualify for a secret security clearance.
and posses a GT score of 110 or higher.

For a perfect score:
3 mile run in 18 minutes, 20 deadhang pull-ups(No Swinging)
100 sit-up/crunchs under two minutes.
500 meter swim using side or breast stroke.
50 meter swim holding a weight out of water, tread water for 30 seconds holding a weight out of water, no signs of panic.

Or:
Two of the better ways of becoming a Scout/Sniper are through a Recon unit or an Infantry Battalion.
First join the Marine Corps with an Infantry MOS. While in Boot Camp you will need to shoot Expert on the rifle range, become at least a second class swimmer and score a high first class PFT.

Upon completion of Infantry training you will be given the opportunity to volunteer for Recon or Force Recon.

If you successfully complete their indoc you will be sent to a Recon unit where you will first qualify as a Recon Marine then given the opportunity to volunteer for Scout/Sniper School.

BN Recon and Force Recon have school seats assigned to them for every S/S School.

Lastly:

The other way is to be sent to an Infantry Battalion and then volunteer for the Scout/Sniper Platoon.

The S/S Plt runs indocs annually and pulls in personnel from the BN.

Each Sniper unit runs its own version of the indoc but they are all extremely difficult. Once in the unit you will go through all the training to become a sniper before ever going to S/S School.

Once at the school you will be expected to have all the basic knowledge of a Scout/Sniper and the advanced knowledge of an infantry Marine.
You will show up with everything that you will need to make it through the school including your ghillie suit.
There are no second chances at the school and drops are a daily occurrence.
Marine Snipers are generally regarded as the best snipers in the world.

My husband is one,and they are very few. He has been deployed 4 times..and they use them all the time!! He had to go through alot of testing,and beat out others for the spot. He just got sent off with a really cool Sniper Rifle and he loves it!

First off, you would need to be an amazing shot, kind of a natural and then hone your skills in the military and go into sniper training.

In the military they take you to the rifle range and once you qualify expert that means you get a perfect score at shooting the pop up targets. I must warn you the last target is like 300yds a way on a hill, at least it was when I went to basic.

Basic training (8+ weeks)
Advanced training (about six more weeks)
You might be able to go to snipe school from there, but I believe you have to go to some form of special forces training (i.e. Ranger school) with a specialty in sniper.
Talk to a recruiter, then do some research. Recruiters will tell you want to hear. Make sure you know the facts before signing anything.

There is a sweet documentary in either Discovery, History Channel, or Military Channel, that follows a class of sniper students as they go through their actual training. It was for the British Army, but still it is good enough to give you a test of the kind of thing that they go through during training.

The show should be in rotation at least once per month.

The way you end up a sniper is by starting in the infantry, then proving both that you are an exceptional shot, and that you have the patience of a saint. Snipers are trained to sit out for hours and days while waiting for a target.

well my husbamd did not become a sniper untill he actually got to his duty station, but really all i know is you have to have a good eye , be a damn good shot, pretty much you can't miss one just about, but i'm not a 100% sure.

You will get the best training in the Marine Corps. You will have to shoot expert on the rifle range. Then the fun begins in Sniper School.

Good luck, my nephew is a sniper & must be pretty good as his promotions have been rapid for Army.
You must have 20/20 eyesight
20% is shooting ability (although you must score really well)
patient
disciplined
work alone
concealment
camouflage (different from concealment - concealment is hiding)
observation

You must volunteer & be recommended by your Commanding Officer. Sniper school stated in 1955 and moved to Ft. Benning, GA in 1987. There is a lot more information on Army website.

I won't know much, but I do know some of the important facets of a sniper.

Only [tom I] mentioned it here, you need an extremely stable mentality to do the job. And although a lot of people in the military are good shots, they are not snipers. Training is one part, the other more significant part is that you had to have the natural ability (i.e the natural hunter-killer instinct). That's extremely rare.

My high-school buddy became a SEAL Sniper, even he conceded the point that he's not as good as those who have a natural flair and talent for it. Training helps, but only to a certain point.

But best of luck if you feel that's what suits you.

Considder your choice carefully, it takes a very stable personality to do this.
I was buddied up with one for a while in Nam, and all I can say is, it is a job that I don't think I could have handled.
