Well let me first start off by saying he would be making a good decision. Length of service comes down to how long he wants to serve, and whether he wants active or reserve. Air force contracts are 8 years total (say he does 4 active, then he has 4 reserve) I highly doubt he can get a 2 year active duty contract (they don't waste their time) He might be looking at a 4 year contract, but I would suggest a 6 year active duty contract b/c you up to e-3 after tech school I believe. I doubt he will get any signing bonus or anything (unless gets a certain job). If he has college credits he can be moved up a rank if he has enough (I think its somewhere around 30 credits). If he does really good on the asvab (90's) he will probably be able to get a guaranteed job (unless he is a push over about it) Jobs that are more likely to be open are mechanical and electronics work (general jobs, not so much). Overall the air force has a higher standard of living. Make sure he knows that the air force is not just sitting on your a$$ like most people think. They will deploy you! I'm in the delayed enlistment program right now for the air force, and every vet. I have talked to has said I have made a good choice (I was originally going to go with marines).
