The US Military vs Animal Cruelty/Abuse?

Should military Dogs be protected by law from being subjected to the horrors and violence of a man made war?
Is it right to subject innocent helpless animals/dogs to the shock and violence of war?
And because the poor dog is mentally in severe shock ...It is then discarded like a piece of trash and murdered....It is barbaric that the US military will not even think twice about murdering the loyal dog that helped to serve its country .......This is appalling and uncivilized for this time period.

a very close neighbor is a dog handler on just off for his next stint with his command of bomb sniffing dogs..I asked him and he said that in general IF the dog can go home with his handler then this is of course the 1st option..other than that they are put down as they are too highly trained to be just lets loose with anyone................he described highly trained as being attack dogs that would NOT always be suitable for a home environment ever.

The thing is IMO I would much rather send in a few dogs [and I have my own] than have to send in my son or husband..

Suppose you missed the bit about the marine bringing back a stray all the way from Iraq...........

Link to this. All the military dogs I know of live at home with their handlers like pets. Unless they are too injuried to survive, they get better care than many people I know.

Military dogs are NOT murdered. Often they are 'retired' and given to a good home. Where did you hear such insane misinformation? Police as well as military dogs are treated very well. My neighbor's son adopted one of the search dogs used in the Twin Towers area. A local cop has a dog that 'retired' with many honors. So you have NO idea what you're talking about. Better quit listening to those inbred TALK SHOWS.

It may seem that way but the reality is a bit different. Dogs play an important role in both the police force and the military. A lot of times they are used to sniff out bombs and security. The soldiers that have dogs as companion for the most part take good care of them. They get really attached to them. Dogs, in the military are not used for attacked purposes. They are used for policing purposes. You won't see a dog in the front lines. This is both for the safety of the dog and the soldiers. You do not want an animal to get in the way both endangering itself and the soldiers. Dogs are also use as warning. Again, mostly for policing purposes.

A soldier or police officer would avoid getting his dog in danger. A dog is a partner not a tool. That's why we have robots. Unfortunately the dog works in a hazardous environment. Every now and then a dog will get kill just as a soldier or police office gets kill in the line of duty. The dogs get the same respect in both the military and in the police force as a soldier or officer.

I think you have a lot of wrong assumptions about our arm forces. Our soldiers fight wars that are unpopular and something unjustified. That is a different issue. Please don't blame the soldier. DO blame the people in power at that time. A soldier does not get to choose when or where he/she is sent. He/she does its duty.

Also, although animals have feelings and can be traumatized just as humans can, the dog itself is not a human. We tend to give animals human qualities that they just don't have. To a dog seeing some dead body in the middle of the road has a different effect than when we humans see the same body.

Well, if you believe PETA, then all pets and farm animals should be released from captivity.

I wouldn't call military dogs helpless though. You know, teeth and all? Yes, what you're describing happened after Vietnam, but the US Military has pledged never to dispose of military working dogs in such a manner again. A change in the law now allows military dogs to be retired after their service is completed.

This strikes me as an ethics or science question, because there are other aspects of this equation you seem to not be acknowledging. I appologize, however, if you have. To the answer...

Canines have run alongside mankind for millenia. These animals are very pack oriented, and are just as aggressive and violent as humans. Having watched a dog attack a small child and kill it, for little to no reason, I think there is still yet research to be done concerning dogs than meets the eye.

Also, look at the dogs used by the military, and the type of service it is used for.

Guard dogs tend to be large, aggressor animals, not small pacific ones.

Mascotts are quite well treated, leading very comfortable lives. The USMC has quite a few of these, as does the US Army and the USAF. Jack Russles and other types of working dogs, still, are the preferred breeds of choice, as it is not usually good PR for a unit to have a chihuahua or a pomeranian as a mascott. The dogs they tend to use are hounds, terriers, bulldogs, and the sort.

You aren't one of the Meet Your Meat people are you?

Police K9's are in harm's way too. What about them?

Unfortunately war isn't pretty and anyone in a war zone is subjected to shock and violence.

The u.s. military considers dogs military property that is to be "disposed" of after use.

Fortunately, this practice is being phased out and many military dogs are retired to civilian life. These brave dogs are trained to assist, protect, and serve their masters in uniform and should be treated as the heroes they are.

Great question.

TRUE PATRIOT
I don't know where you got your information but the US does not murder their dogs after they have served their country. They usually live with their handlers just like police dogs do.

People are more important then animals. If having animals saves lives in combat we should have them there. Dogs in the military are treated well. Their handlers rely on them for safety.

Your kidding me right?? Do you know how many soldiers have died in IRAQ and your worried about dogs? Yes, I know that you are gonna say that soldiers volunteer to do their job. But honestly...are you half as worried about the human lives lost. And if your worried about Innocent lives what about children that have gotten caught in the middle over there? I think you should really evaluate your priorities.

Dogs Aren't Like Humans They Don't Get In "Mentally Severe Shock".They Have A Job That They Are Trained To Do And They Do It.They Do Not Complain Like Some Humans Do.

The military is not very kind to animals, my dad recalls being forced to operate on a goat that was shot as a training excercise. As for the idiots who think military dogs get a retirement, give me a break, when they hit the age of 12 they are often put to sleep. (I can't spell euthanized)
