Retaliation will bring down on the pirates a swift response and will give them no ransom... guess what pirates, you just lost your income! NOW WHAT MUST BE DONE IS ARM THE MERCHANT SHIPS PERHAPS EVEN HAVE GUARD DOGS ABOARD otherwise our politicians and appropriate law makers need to be removed from their office and replaced by those who use their common sense.
ALSO THERE MUST BE MARITIME LAWS IMMEDIATELY THAT GIVE THESE MERCHANT SHIPS AND OR USA MILITARY AUTHORITY TO DESTROY ANY BOAT THAT COMES WITHIN A SPECIFIC DISTANCE OF THE MERCHANT SHIPS WITHOUT ADDITIONAL NOTICE. WE MUST BE FIRM AND SWIFT IN OUR ACTIONS... WERE NOT PLAYING GAMES AND WE DONT GIVE IN TO TERRORISTS, PIRATES, CRIMINALS, KIDNAPPERS... Obama has already taken steps, as have other countries, but they are protecting an Ocean 2/3 the size of the US with the equivalent of 26 police cars!

I am for arming the boats, however the first time they kill some innocent people there will be hell to pay.

I am sure many politicians are thinking about 123 elite U.S. soldiers dropped into Somalia to capture two top lieutenants of a renegade warlord which later became known as "Black-hawk Down"!

I am sure not many want to venture into that territory anytime soon. These people are worse than the North Vietnamese. They don't care if they are killed!

I would like to see some approved air-raids on their launch sites and the military to inspect all the large fishing vessels they are actually launched from. That would be easier.

That whole country is corrupt and it is ruled by many warlords! They have nothing to lose and everything to gain by their piracy!

I'm sure Obama is talking to the U.N. about it now. Yeah, that'll help. The U.N. has stopped so many conflicts from happening haven't they? I can't think of one actually.

Dude, I think you just answered your own question. Now, the reason that these merchant vessels are unarmed is because of a liability issue. God forbid these guys be allowed to defend themselves.

The international maritime laws that are in effect right now clearly state that a vessel that is armed is not a commercial vessel - it is a warship. If a container ship that is registered in Panama puts a machine gun on the bridge, it is no longer a commercial ship - it becomes a Panamanian warship. If it fires on a target, it becomes an international incident.

Also, there are huge restrictions on warships that want to go into port in a foreign nation. It can take weeks or longer to get country clearance to enter - which would just about destroy commercial activity - as over 95% of international trade goes by sea.

Sorry, but it won't work.

Really think about this. If the US gets to "destroy any boat that comes within a specific distance" then EVERY other country will want that authority too. Sounds like a great plan!

Nice little rant.

I stated in an answer to another question that we should attack all ports that pirates operate from. These ports need to be leveled and nothing in a 10 mile radius from the port should be living when we are done. Period.
