As much as I hate to admit it, I have to say your comparison does seem apt. Already today, I have seen OIF called immoral, and have seen our soldiers called baby killers. Shades of Vietnam, indeed.
I disagree with you about what we need to do, however. As has been mentioned in another question, if we pull out now, we will lose all credibility in the world. Our enemies will have won. They will know all they have to do is kill a few servicemen and the cowardly Americans will demand their troops returned. No, we made a commitment and we must see it through to the end. I know you don't agree with me, but that is what I think.
Edit: Robin, read your history book again. We entered Vietnam under a Democratic president didn't leave until a Republican president pulled our troops out. Again, I say, I pray that error is not repeated. |

I have to agree. The press and the liberals stabbed the soldiers in the back the same way. The Tet Offensive was a collosal defeat for the North Vietnamese and it was reported as a loss for the US. Just as the communists were teetering on the edge of collapse the wahabi extremists are too. After the collapse of Viet Nam the communist were emboldened and we had twenty more years of communism butchering the world. The terrorists will also be braver and more dangerous too.
To top it off we have a lot of people giving the soldiers the traditional baby killer rants and spitting on them. As a bonus this time around they have funeral protests. You liberals should be giving each other hi fives.
I hope the military gives you all the stiff middle finger the next time "you need us". |

When we left Vietnam in '73, we left a government that was capable (with assistance) of defending itself. By 1975, Sen Edward Kennedy and the Democratic party had cut off all support of the South Vietnamese government. The results was bloodshed as we abandoned our allies. Hundreds of thousands lost their lives in Vietnam and Cambodia because we abandoned them. Regardless of whether you think we should have gone to war in Iraq, you have to face the fact that if we just leave now, the result will be the same...bloodshed much greater than what we are seeing now. |

I think you are an uneducated, liberal, anti-war idiot that has no idea what you are talking about. You probably are not around for vietnam and are only being told what your liberal teachers/professors want you to know.
But you are correct in one aspect, our politicians today are acting just as they did during the vietnam conflict. They are trying to run the war from Washington and not letting the generals run the war. |

Bad comparison, although popular these days.
Vietnam:
1. We were fighting against a totalitarian dictator who had no intention of destroying the U.S., only South Vietnam.
2. Americans never favored the war much to begin with.
3. Most American soldiers returned from Vietnam demoralized, wondering what we were doing there.
War on "terror:"
1. We are fighting against a global-supremacist movement that considers the U.S. and our civilians its #1 targets. These enemies will never stop or accept peace because they believe Allah demands a world ruled by Islam.
2. After 9-11, Americans were 96% in favor of using military force to engage and destroy Islamic terrorists wherever they were, making no distinction "between the terrorists and the countries who harbor[ed] them."
3. A vast majority of returning servicemen say they are making progress and understand the overarching mission and its importance.
Other than unpoularity, the 2 wars are dissimilar. The Civil War was very unpopular, too. Doing the right thing is usually more difficult and unpoular than doing the right thing. |

Number one, the French were in Vietnam before we were. This did not happen in Iraq. Number two, the slaughtering of over 2 million people after we left Vietnam will be small compared to the killings that will occur if we leave Iraq in a unstable manner. Number three, the total dead in Iraq in 4 1/2 years does not equal the deaths in Vietnam for one month. Number 4 it is the same as far as the Democratic party wanting to wave a white flag and kiss the rear ends of our enemies.
We did a poor job of securing Iraq after toppling their Government. we need to stay and fix the problem and not desert the poor people of Iraq to do all the work. They want us to secure their country and then they want us to leave. The killers in that country are the same type of killers that want world domination through radical Islam. It must be stopped their and everywhere it exists. |

Yes this war needs to end. All wars need to end the real question should be how do we end this war. (Vietnam is one word by the way.) I believe we can win this and that we can win this war fast if we as an American public want to. But we are afraid to us some tactics that just seem "wrong" to some people. I think we should go into what Gen. Sherman called total war and use everything we know about the enemy against them. We should dip out bullets in pig grease hang dead pigs in places where suicide bombers would like to go. We should use tactical nuclear warheads in areas where insurgents are known to be hiding. I'm not talking about ICBMs here I'm talking about small missiles that leave a nice sized mark. This war does have some parallels to the Vietnam war in the fact that we are not using all the resources that we have its not like it would cost more we already have them made. This war can be a success and a quick one at that but we afraid to use what we have and what we know. We have to turn why they fight against them. OK ill stop now. |

When was there peace and love? saddam declared war on humanity killing 100,000s of Kurdish and Shiite Iraqis while the US and EU enjoy years of selfish indulgence. If you were under the type of rule Iraqis were wouldn't you hope another human being would help you?
This is not like Vietnam, look at what is being accomplished. Hopefully bringing an end to the oppression in most Mid-east countries will bring about lasting peace and prosperity that region has not seen in centuries. This would be one of the greatest achievements any nation has accomplished in its history given the Middle East's history. |

Go read the koran and learn about shariah law and see what our islamofascist enemies want you to live like. Surah 4:34 says men are superior to women and a man should beat his wife if he thinks she us considering being disobedient, and he should only stop beating her if she obeys his every wish. Is that how you want to live? Liberals who say we should not defend America from muslim terrorists would be the first people the terrorists hunt down and kill if they had the power. Stop believing the lies liberals tell. Wake up and smell the jihad. |

To go to war the President MUST receive approval from Congress. Do your research. My hubby is working on serving his third tour of duty in Iraq, and I'm quite proud of him. He was part of the battle for Fallujah in Nov. '04. Half his platoon was wounded in the first day alone, so your darn right I'm proud. |

All wars eventually end. This war is similar to Vietnam in that we are willing militarily, hell, it's a land slide victory but the American public is fickle and can not support a war for long if they do not feel their own personal safety is in danger. The best way to make sure this war becomes just like Vietnam all over again is to pull out before we destroy the enemy. |

You can't compare the Iraq War to the Vietnam War. There are too many differences such as who we are fighting and why we are fighting. And no, I think the we should see the war through to the end. |
