The war in iraq?
Find answers to your legal question.

The war in iraq?

how long do you think the war will last will it be over soon like people are saying will it drag out for 5-6 more years i know young high schoolers well the smart ones have thought about this if they want to join the marine corp or army infantry or ranger regiment and the war is over they would be sitting there doing nothing training and waiting ..... not much of a career so you think the war is over (almost) or do you think its gonna be a while

I have heard the war will end at around 2012 - 2015 so there's about another 4-7 years still. But even then it won't officially end as it would be unsafe to pull out all at once. But if we get a new president I think things will become safer since they probably will realise what we actually want!

"man on the edge" is almost right. the Korean war NEVER ended. there has been no treaty signed or surrender by either side. the only thing in place is a simple "cease fire" or "cease hostilities". therefore making the korean war the longest running war in american history.

as a soldier it is my duty to carry out the orders of the officers in charge. therefore i could care less when the war in iraq or afghanistan ends. as long as im ordered to go then i will go.

The "war" in Iraq has been over for several years.

We won.

What we are doing now is best described as a police action, trying to solve a very large gang problem.

How long until we leave? Let me put it this way:

How long will it take the Los Angeles Police to rid LA of all its gang violence?

Dude, I really hope you don't think that we are mindless bodies just here to carry out orders. Hey I can't speak for the rest of us, soldiers and vets, but I care about what missions I carry out. If they tell me to deliver ammo, that's what I'll do but don't think for one minute I'll just go. I'll do my homework first before I carry out and complete my mission, just to make sure my soldiers make it out and I make it out alive as well. And I also hope that the people giving the orders know the consequences they will face as a result thereof.

Its probably not going to end anytime soon, but the most important thing that we never lose hope for those people of Iraq and most importantly for our own Country. Yes this is the best Country and I'm proud to serve it, but we can't stand alone.

Here's a fun fact defeatists forget. We defeated the Germans in 1945. We are still there in 2008. Korea "ended" in 1953. We are still there in 2008.

your insights regarding the future are amazing, why aren't you running for President so you can help us poor misguided masses?

That's a toughie. Nov 08 will give a lot of insight into how much longer we will be in Iraq as a combat force. We will have to keep a presence there for a long while, hopefully, as we do in S. Korea. The USA needs to keep a stabilizing force on the ground in the middle east as long as they are fighting one another and try to establish a perminate democracy as long as the citizens want it.

It really depends.

There is no straight answer - There are so many factors that any prediction is no more than a wild-4ss guess.

The insurgency is dying... Quite literally. The local serious, hard-core insurgents have gone political, given it up as 'not working,' or have been killed. The blush is off the rose for foreign fighters - far too many have gone to Iraq looking for glorious war, maybe glorious martyrdom, and simply were captured or killed without anything resembling success - The martyr brigades will only replenish if they think they might achieve something by their deaths, and they aren't. Those whom are NOT martyrs, but instead intend to simply fight as best they can, are finding that their best is not nearly good enough. The pool of foriegn fighters is getting pretty shallow now.

Now, Syria is starting to realize that their 'open border' policy is going to have long-term complicatins for them, and THEY are starting to further restrict the flow of foreign fighters.

Iraqis themselves are tired of the insurgency, and are taking concrete steps to stop it. The Iraqi army is slowly climbing to its feet. The Iraqis remain incredibly willing to volunteer for police jobs, despite massacre after massacre.

BUT...

There IS still an insurgency, and there are still some foriegn fighters coming in. Al Qaeda DESPERATELY does not want Iraq to become a free, pluralistic society - it would give the lie to all they espouse, not to mention be a bloody nose to them after the black eye of Afghanistan. Iran REALLY does not want a western-friendly nation next door. It would make their own policies and practices FAR too glaringly primitive.

SO...

5 years? 6 Years? not unreasonable guesses, though I'd expect US troop strengths to slowly draw down to around 30000 troops by two or three year's time.

When the job is done.
We will have a presence in Iraq for decades. We need to. We have been in Kuwait for 18 years now.
With the amount of money the Army is spending on building up the 8 enduring bases, I do not see us leaving in 20-30 years. We spent $250,000 just in my company area to fix up our barracks and motor pool 3 years ago.

i guess it might officially end in 2014,with that type of situation, its hard just to pull out and go home

I think it will last awhile. There is no end in sight. And if there ever is an end, we will always have US troops in the Middle East for one reason or another.

Dude are you f*cking serious! first of all nobody knows when the war is gonna be over so everybody can give their opinions but its like they say opinions are like @ssholes..everybody has one. and you seem like exactly the type of person that we dont want in the military anyway because you want to sound like you are a hardass but i bet the first bullet that flies over your head youll be sh*tting your pants. dont sit there and think its like when you are playing ghost recon and you die and get another life.. you need to talk to some veterans who have been seriously injured and well see how hardcore you are about wanting to go to a warzone. dont be stupid! if you want to join the military then do it but dont glorify war and death it makes us vets have very little respect for you!
