Thinking of joining the army?

Additional Details
Specifically thinking of the army reserves. I have looked into navy as well - and attempted air force (they never returned my call) - so far the army sounds like the best option for me. I am looking for advice from other reservists as to what they got or are getting out of the army - and if it is the right choice.

The Navy cares more about their people--about to retire from the Army reserve, but did 12 years in the Navy first.

Having server in the Army for three years, here are some guidelines...
1) Talk to a recruiter and tell him that you want to take your ASVAB tests BEFORE you sign anything. The ASVAB test is a test that tells the Army what you do or do not qualify for insofar as what you want to do. After you get your scores, ask the recruiter for a complete list of the things you qualify for. remember, he has a quota to fill, usually for the infantry. DO NOT join the infantry. An infantry soldier is nothing more than **** on the bottom of the Army's boot. Go into computers or healthcare...something you can use when you get out. If the recruiter gives you the runaround, LEAVE!
2) If you are young, be sure to take advantage of the GI Bill or other student loan opportunities.
3) I'd suggest active duty instead of reserves or National Guard. Just join for two years at first, if you like it you can always re-up when two years is over.
4) If you can, I would strongly suggenst becoming an officer, not an enlisted NCO. Officers are taken care of much better than NCO's.
5) I'd also suggest the Air Force over the Army. The Air Force really treats their people well. Try and call that recruiter back, or go to his office.

Remember, take your tests and find out what jobs in the military you qualify for FIRST, before you sign anything. DO NOT let the recruiter talk you into three or more years. Only sign up for two at first. (Two is the minimum you can sign up for) Also remember that the military is a BUSINESS and they will sell you all kinds of crap. If I were you? I'd join the Air Force in their officer training program.

No, I already served -- years ago. Hats off to 2Lt. Sinnott and all others who have stepped forward. Your country appreciates you. I'm afraid I can't speak to the ready reserve, though. I served 4 years active and 2 years of inactive reserve. By the way, if the Air Force didn't return your call, you can always walk right into the recruiter's office. Don't assume that a failure to call back is a rejection. I don't regret a day of my service.

get your degree first and go in as an officer. enlisted life is valuable if you specialize in something valuable in the real world then exit the army and you have a lot of experience.

17 years in and soon to be out. Support if you can't and serve if you can .

i am also thinking of joining the army (national guard) but i know what i want to specialize in and that is 'healthcare'. healthcare is something you can use back in the real world and you can easily get a job as a EMT; paramedic or nurse... good luck!

Been there doing that!

The air force is better, easier training, best food, more technological training you can use when you get out.(Get all recruiter's promises in writing) Most of all, you won't get killed in Iraq
in the sand, if your are back at the hangar fixing engines.

Use your G.I. Bill of Rights to go to college when you get out or maybe take some classes
while you are serving.

Well someone has to do it. Are you willing to die so others can live?
