War in response to attack is just.
War in response to moral or ethical abuse (starving children, genocide, etc.) is just.
In terms of the effects on those fighting or caught in the fighting, war can never be justified. |

In the Christian tradition, a war must meet very strict conditions to be just. In short, innocent life must be at risk, violence must be the last resort for resolving the conflict, and the means must be proportionate to the end sought. Noncombatants must never be targeted. Seen in that light, there are very few just wars-- and it could be argued that no modern war has been just.
I lived for two years in a country undergoing a civil war. Both sides claimed they were fighting for just causes. Both sides killed civilians indiscriminately. And when you got past the rhetoric, both sides were really fighting for their own selfish ends. Sure, both sides had legitimate grievances against the other. But the war they engaged in for over 30 years only made conditions worse for everyone.
I cannot say no war is just, but I can say that no war I've seen has been. Even self-defense is of limited value in justifying war, because it's so easy to prod your enemy into talking action against you, thus justifying a violent response. |
