U.S Rangers vs Marines, whose better trained?

Additional Details
U.S Rangers are elite over Marines period~ Dont suger coat it please. I plan to be a U.S Marine myself but lets not go against FACTS~

It is not uncommon to run into someone from the 75th Ranger Regiment who is Jumpmaster, Pathfinder, Ranger, Scuba, SERE-C, and HALO qualified.

I don't think many Marines outside Force Recon get the opportunity to go to those training schools.

There are 180,000 active duty Marines, not nearly as many Rangers. We have female Marines, Admin Marines, supply Marines. As far as combat effectiveness, i would say that Rangers are glorified 0311's with the ability to jump out of planes. Rangers are special operations capable and as far as highly trained and elite i would compare them to our Marine Expeditionary Units (also special operations capable). They have a tough school, but that does not make them highly trained. I went to catholic school and didnt have girls in the class but that doesnt make me any more of an SAT taker than the guy who went to public school. Catch my drift. If comparing Marine Infantry and Rangers, iw ould say the weapons capabilities would come down to that individuals skills. Marsoc and Battalion Recon for the Corps are on a whole different level than the Rangers. I guarantee you you would not find one infantry US Marine who could not do the Rangers physical qualifications ( 6 chin ups 49 pushups 5 miles in 40 minute.) Also we do 500 yards in the Corps, i dont know how far the length goes for Rangers, i assume the standard 300 for the Army. I am a United States Marine, and i can tell you there isnt an individual out there anywhere in the world i would feel "out of my league" going toe to toe with, but that doesnt mean you dont give respect where its due. Rangers are highly motivated and skilled soldiers, but nothing super. You want the best in my opinion? Delta, Force Recon, Seals, Army SF and Air Force PJs are the creme of the crop.

EDIT: Youre wrong, the rangers arent trained to sneak in and out without ever being seen more than any one else. Their an assault force who project violence in a rapidly deployable, sometimes airborne fashion. Your mixing up the special forces and the rangers. Theyre light infantry, not special ops. Example, in the rescue of Jessica Lynch, the Rangers set up a perimeter while Seals and Delta went in for the sneak and extract like youre thinking the rangers conduct. Rangers are an assault force, not Jack Bauer secret mission type ****. Look at what happened to Tilman, he got shot by his own men. Doesnt sound SUPER elite to me.

And i dont knwo who told you the fib that the Rangers weed out 90 percent. Maybe 90 percent of the people who show up for the indoc dont get to go to school. They have about a 40 percent weed out rate once their in the school. I know plenty of Rangers, theyre ok. There are 10,000s of thousands of soldiers who completed ranger school for the Ranger tab, and arent rangers. You watched too many movies.

Ok. Honestly i cant believe we have so many people answering this question that arent even in the service. I am a "ranger" medic in the Army. I, however, come from a mostly marine family. This puts me in a position to see both sides and answer without bias. Not to mention, im in IRAQ right now. (this is the place where your training is put to test)

everyone who has been to any military school knows that its 50% skill and 50% not quitting. that being said, there are alot of people wearing ranger tabs who completed ranger school, but dont live up to the ranger standard or reputation. you must also remember that real rangers are in a ranger batt and not just guys who wear tabs.

when i was attached to the infantry i was a line medic. i did all the training the infantryman did. not only that, i outdid alot of them. i outshot our entire company earning an aam from our BC. (that is ridiculous by the way) my point is that your average army infantryman is undertrained and not very efficient, but they get the job done. i saw that firsthand in iraq with those guys. they werent the best, but i felt we could get the job done on a daily basis. dont get me wrong. im not the medic at the aid station. i toss houses. i do clearing ops. real work.

marines on the other hand are better trained, but lack the numbers. it is true that every marine is trained as an infantryman first. while this is great, also remember that combat oriented training isnt just something you do. its a perishable skill. if you dont practice daily, weekly, whatever it takes, you will not be proficient.

the marines we worked with in iraq were great. they knew their ****. i knew right then exactly what was up. ill break it down.

If you need a military presence, (which 9 times out of 10 will resolve any small scale activity over here) you send the infantry.

If you have a no **** objective, you send a carefully selected group of infantry (the company commanders know what platoon is capable)

if its a high level target they send SF.

remember tho that SF works in small groups, therefore if its a big area, guess who's going? the INFANTRY.

notice i didnt mention marines. most times we have very minor intersections of responsibility over here. so if something small happens in the marines AO, they deal with it. if its too big for them the army comes to help, but not because the army is better... we just have bigger numbers. for their size the marines do amazing work. very proficient groups. and they train nonstop.

there are high speed army infantry units and there are bad ones. most fall in the middle (which is substandard). remember that marines are department of the navy. their sf would pretty much be the seals (on paper) but i dare you to go up to a force recon team and tell them that they are not elite soldiers.

i know im rambling madly, but im in iraq so all i can do is ***** :) I'll leave you with this thought. If i take 5 of the best army guys and 5 of the best marines, it would be dead even, but if i took 5 and 5 of average soldiers... the marines take the cake.

being a ranger is about sticking to the plan in the shittiest of conditions for an extended amoutn of time and actually completing the mission successfully.

being a marine is more raw. id take on these ******* b4 id take on marines.

The average Marine in general is better trained than the average Soldier.

But Rangers are better trained than the average Marine. Rangers are special forces and got additional training above and beyond what an average Marine gets.

This question and others like it have appeared hundreds of times over 6 months. With the same answers every time.

How can you compare the 2 units, when they are both highly trained and have different roles.

The answer is simple, the are both very good at what they do and it would not be wise to take them on.

I think there is a misunderstanding here. What do you mean by Rangers are more elite than Marines? What criteria is being used to evaluate?

Are you talking about those soldiers who have completed Ranger school? Some of these individuals will never be actual Rangers, that is, deploy with a Ranger battalion. Marines and Rangers have many of the same prerequisites, as far as PT is concerned. Rangers are just the Army's version of professional infantry. Not to take anything away from them but I don't believe there is any kind of comparison that can be made here. Each force has separate duties and separate requirements.

Tier assets? Do you have any idea what you are talking about? Do you actually think units are 'weighed' by their asset tier designation? If something needs to be done the first most readily available force is going to be deployed to do it.

Rangers in reality do not 'sneak in and sneak out', they work in battalion size elements. You try sneaking an infantry battalion in somewhere and then sneaking it out and I'll be impressed.

I believe Rangers are a very valuable asset to the Army and Marines are also a valuable asset to our nation's military as a whole. The training is not contingent on the force you join inasmuch as it is contingent on the NCOs who happened to be in charge of the training. I'll take a discipline, well versed culinary NCO over a s%$bag lazy infantry NCO anyday. So there is really no way to make this comparison.

Actually, many marines go to train with the Rangers at ranger school. I would definitely say Rangers are more elite

It depends. The marines are trained for combat, and the rangers are trained for situational special operations. There is really no comparison between the two as they have different objectives. For infantry combat marines receive more in depth training, while rangers recieve much better training in regards to stealthy infiltration etc.

US Army Rangers are better trained than the average 0311 Marine (Infantry), as a fighting force they're not so different, in fact they share many qualities. I think that Force Recon shares even more qualities with Rangers, but in general they are somewhat similar.

To be a Ranger you have to pass Army basic (not so hard), go to airborne school (alot harder), then go to Ranger school from what I understand is extremely difficult.

To be a US Marine you pass Boot, then move on the school according to your MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) but only after completeing a basic infantry course called School of Infantry, if you are actually Infantry then you go to a more in depth school for your MOS.

Rangersr are more on par with Force Recon or MARSOC since they actually go to Ranger School as well.

By the way, Rangers are'nt spec ops, just elite infantry like the Marines.

lone butcher Spartan remembers
Which is better trained, A-Rod or Kobe Briant?

Hey SOME Rangers are better trained than SOME Marines. And vice versa. Look at the Marines Recon guys, they receive just as much if not more training than Rangers. The AVERAGE is what this is all about, and the AVERAGE Ranger is better trained than the AVERAGE Marine. That does not mean that Rangers are better trained than all Marines, or even ones that aren't special operations.
That's your problem, you can't compare averages because in different situations (and jobs, which is the difference of the two) they would do different things.

Rangers are 3rd tier, SF is 2nd, Delta is 1st.
Force Recon is 2nd.

EDIT: Dangit It's Danger Ranger!

MrUSMC
okay guy. Rangers are not Spec ops. they are just the army's source of muscle. they come in when the regular rag tag army infantry cant exactly handle the wieght. The average army soldier. is not to great my friend. dont get me wrong there are many army infantryman that are very good fast and efficient but one doesnt make a whole unit. The marines recieve better training then a average army soldier. BUT the rangers are elite. but lets not go as far as saying they tower over the marines. i have met MARSOC and Force Recon marines. not only are these guys extremely buff. there fast. in unbelievable shape. as you said. lets not go against the FACTS
