UH-60 Blackhawk continued!?

After flight school, will you ship out to Iraq? Also, what is the National Guard (Ky) like as a husband and father. How do the wives cope with your absence. From what I understand, the entire process, if selected, will take a few years. If shipped out to Iraq, who knows. That is a long time away from home. I am ready and willing to serve our country as an Army Aviator, however I have no idea how my wife and children will deal with the situation. Any suggestions? Also, I checked on my last vision test which revealed that my left eye was 20/20, and the right 20/25. Am I out of the running?

Eyesight only need to be correctable to 20/20, but can be up to 20/50 uncorrected. However, you can have no other visual defects like lack of perfect depth perception, color vision, night vision, and no diseases which would otherwise hinder you from flying. See AR 40-501, Standards of Medical Fitness and it will outline all the details for medical flying duty in chapter 4.

Chapter 4
Medical Fitness Standards For Flying Duty

4–12. Vision

The causes of medical unfitness for flying duty Classes 1/2/2F/3/4 are the following:

a. Class 1. Any disqualifying condition must be referred to optometry or ophthalmology for verification.
(1) Distant visual acuity. Uncorrected distant visual acuity worse than 20/50 in each eye. If the distant visual acuity is 20/50 or better in either eye, each eye must be correctable to 20/20 with no more than 1 error per 5 presentations of 20/20 letters, in any combination, on either the Armed Forces Vision Tester (AFVT) or any projected Snellen chart set at 20 feet. (See ATB, Distant Visual Acuity Testing and APL, Decreased Visual Acuity.)

As a National Guard officer, you are at home all the time except for one weekd a month, 2 weeks a year unless you are deployed. While you are in ROTC and/or flight school, your family may live with you.

If you're not already in the army, enlist as a 15 series, that's aviation, preferably 15N or 15T, once you're there your leaders can give you all the info you need. If you're already in the army, go find a pilot!
