US bases in UK?

If a future British goverment told the Americans to close their bases in the UK,would they refuse to go? as per Cuba.

Yes they would refuse.you don`t see them leaving other countries where they are not wanted and people who say they are our friend have got no idea. When Americans where openly fundraising to help the IRA kill us the American government made no attempt to stop them in fact they where freedom fighters not Terrorists and the American Government even threatened England because of Ireland .Not that i have any disrespect for the Irish as i have plenty of Irish relatives. I`m only trying to point out that America does nothing for us or any other country out of friendship every thing America does is for their own interests

I doubt any British government in the near, not so near, or even distant future would do that. That being said I guess it would depend on the state of the world at the time.
Good question by the way.

will never happen like that, we are united

If you guys wanted us to leave I suppose we would. But us leaving wouldnt be a good thing for us or you. The economy of those towns ( where the bases are ) depend on our presence. That being said, why would you want us to leave? Are we no longer allies? Are we no longer partners? If so, it is truley a sad day.

Cuba is not the US refusing to go. The US has a lease on the land in Cuba...

"US Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay is leased to US and only mutual agreement or US abandonment of the area can terminate the lease"

And yes, If asked to leave the UK, the US would, but I doubt that would happen.

I hope not, we will need them when we take on Islam.

It would be a sad day for us if they ever pulled out.

After the 2nd world war, we were in such a dire situation as we had had to borrow so much money from the yanks for the bit of the war they didn't turn up for.

After the war they virtually held us to ransom by insisting in certain changes. Not only did we pay a higher rate of interest than most third world contries are at the moment, they rewrote our trade agreements with several countries.

Unfortunatly I think this was also part of the agreement, to allow them to use our country as a base 'Just in case'. I don't know how long they agreed to, but I doubt they would leave any earlier than they had to and I know Mr. Blair wouldn't make them. After all weren't they going to be out of Iraq in 6 months.

I wonder how much is actually spent in the local economies? probably not a lot when they have their own catering services etc on base. Why can't they have permanent bases in other countries instead of the Uk and would they mind if we said, "oh we'll come along and open a Raf/Army base in the US". Another this that pisses me off is when the contracts were handed out to companies for the rebuilding of Iraq, which country was doing the dishing out? The US of course and how many contracts went to non US companies? Er none!

The two big bases are in Suffolk, Mildenhall and Lakenheath and both serve as primarily a gateway to Europe and the East. They are not located here to defend the United Kingdom and christ would we really want them to?

I doubt they would refuse to go if asked.

PS: And their personnel (military and civilian) don't pay council tax? How wrong is that.

They may well refuse to go using the argument that it would bring instability to the security of the west as they would be a less effective deterrent. However, I hope it never comes to that because we need them probably more than they need us. How would we fight this evil spreading across the world and already swamping our wonderful country without the Americans? How would the other civilised countries survive without the Americans. Love them or hate them, you can't live without them.

Hang on a second, why do th US need a base in our country anyway. We are more capable than most of defending our country. Can we have a base in the US please incase something needs sorting and the US is away for the weekend. The bases the US uses could be used by our forces or even as new Prisons seeing as we have a problem with them at the moment. As for the local economies failing i doubt they would if these bases were used for something differnet and not just abandond. I have no problem with the US having forces based here but why cant we have bases there. And for everyones information they need us more than we need them, ( Iraq? )

Bunts
Talk of the local economy being hit is a blind. How many RAF bases - which also support the local economy - have been closed? What happened at Greenham Common? National public pressure made the Americans pull out.
But it will never come to that because the American presence in the UK is part of the western allies defences.
The Americans are always welcome in the UK - it is their USE you need to worry about.

I very much doubt that will ever happen, but I suppose the USA would have to leave as the leases to the land expired, but in the case of some where like JMF St. Mawgan they have almost indefinite leases and are still thinking about closing it down [USA choice not UK]

I think the local economy's would be hit very very hard.
