So I read this old article from 2007 about a 49-year-old National Guard guy going to Iraq in combat.
What's the upper age limit to go to war (and by go to war, I mean really fight during battles) ?

If the person is on full active duty and his unit is called, he/she goes. If the person is in the active or inactive reserve and his unit is called up to go, he/she is gone. The is no age limit. Wrote all this then read your link. This gentlemen is an exception. A real hard core exception. He has extensive military training and experience and I'm sure his National Guard unit is glad to have him and glad that he's going. I, too, am extremely proud of him. God bless him. |

62 years old.
The maximum age to serve on active duty.
But there have been people older than that deploy.

There are way older folks than that. The Hawaii Guard had two 62 + 63 year old Warrant Officer pilots who deployed together a few years back. Took a SECDEF waiver to allow it.
It is not unusual in the Guard or Reserve where you can serve until age 60 without a waiver. |
