Was the vietcong with the communist north vietnam or the not communist south ...

They were communists from the south of vietnam(communism was much more popular than capitalism in vietnam as a whole). The NVA(north vietnamese army) was the communists from north vietnam. Both were allied.

They were Vietnamese Communists. Guerrillas proficient in stealth, logistics and surviving by little more than a bowl of rice a day.
We were in their backyard and they had the ultimate advantage. Consider them like Vietnam's Indians with years of jungle warfare experience. Their fierce dedication and brutal tactics forced the US to adapt. Our military learned a lot and that makes us the best in the world. There's my long winded rant.
