MWR stands for Morale Welfare and Recreation and has actually been changed to the Department of Family Morale Welfare and Recreation. They provide morale enhancements for servicemembers like goodie bags, free phone calls home, computers with internet access that can be used for free, free wireless internet, non-competitive sports leagues for military children, family trips, financial advice, information on bases, parties, toy drives, reduced cost sporting equipment for rent; overall, just a host of things to make life a little easier and the services they provide depends on your location. They are far more involved in keeping servicemembers and families happy overseas as opposed to in the States. I am stationed in Germany but deployed to Iraq so we use a lot of their services. Both of my children have basically lived their lives in Germany but through MWR programs, they are able to stay just a little closer to living the way they would in the U.S. Being deployed, they gave me goodie bags when I was preparing to leave, they gave my wife and I briefings on how they could help us through the deployment, and here in Iraq, they allow me to make free phone calls home sometimes, they have computers that I can use to email or IM home, they provide tents where you can play pool or cards or watch a movie or sign out books and movies like a library. They are also the department that primarily provides things like concerts on base and childcare for the little ones. Two other things that just came to mind are that they also offer training in the community like life saver skills or childcare training for teens who want to baby sit. |
