The point of war is to defend yourself and render your attacker physically incapable of attacking you.
We had a perfect example of why we heed a strong military that has the capacity to crush an enemy with massive overwhelming military force when The Muslim Terrorists hijacked those planes and crashed them into the World Trade Center.
The mistake that we made was not using the military force that we have to destroy The Muslim Terrorists because we were afraid of the number of civilian casualties that would have resulted.
We need to learn that when we are attacked by an enemy the first rule is to destroy the enemy.
We need to be less concerned about civilian casualties. |

That depends upon the war. throughout history there have been many Points of war. One (if you don't count thousands of minor battles we'll never hear about) was over a woman. Others over Land, or power. Others over made up stupid stuff. Still others Freedom. And it is this one point for which I served.

Wearher you are a child in a school yard, a world leader, or somewhere in between the story is the same. Consider these scenearios.
1A. You have what I want and I am willing to fight you to take it from you.
1B What I have I am not willing to give to you so I will defend myself by fighting back.

2A. I have certain relegious beliefs that are not the same as yours and I am going to kill you in order to force my beliefs onto you, in the name of my god.
2B. I will defend my own religious beliefs and be victorious because god is on my side.

3A. I am the product of a race that is superior to to your race. This gives me the obligation to make the world a better place by eliminating your race.
3B. Your race is not superior to mine and I will prove it by stopping you.
--------------------------------------... AGAIN-----------------------------------...
4A. I see you as a threat to me so I will eliminate you and therfore the threat.
4B. Not without a fight buddy.
-------------------------------HERE WE GO AGAIN-----------------------------------...
5A. I hate you,[your color, language, customs, strengths, weaknesses etc.} so you must be defeated and succumb to my will.
5B. I will not do so, I will defend my color etc.

Get the idea. war is both simple and complex at the same time. |

wHAT IS THE POINT OF WAR?? For some it is to conquer their enemies and take there land. For others it is to stop these people. For some it is to ensure that you are not attacked by your enemies. |

In general, the purpose of waging war is to get something done that can't be done peacefully. Usually the simple threat of military action is enough to get people to do things.

In every war there are several turning points.
For World War 2 a few major turning points are:
The german decision to stop the advance in France, thus allowing the British and French Reebarkment in Dunkirk.
The german decision to invade Russia.
The US entering the war after Pearl Harbor.
Stalingrad.
The Strategic bombings in Germany '43-'44.
Kursk (more than Stalingrad, here the germans lost the initiative of the war in the east for good).
The surrender of The Afrika Korps.
The Success of the D-Day Landings Midway

Life is full of contradictions , you may try to run away from them and hallucinate that everybody smile all day long and agree about everything but it ain't necessarily so.
there are many way to resolve contradictions ,war is one of them.
i believe that most times the reason publicly given for war is not the real one.
I also wish that there weren't any wars but life sometimes requires you to stand up and protect what's sacred for you.
If, by any chance ,you are wondering why are fighting in Iraq i can say that i'm not really sure but i guess that post 9/11 its better to take war to the enemy's land.
its the only logical strategic maneuver to avoid loosing. (ask any chess player) |
