WW II - Why didn't we drop the Bomb on Tokyo?

This may be a dumb question and if I'm ignorant, please forgive me but...
Why didn't we drop the A-Bomb on Tokyo? It would seem to me that since that was their biggest city, their capital, the centralized headquarters for everything, that this would be the place to bomb and send a bigger message. What was in Nagasaki and Hiroshima that was was more important than Tokyo?

Because there were a large number of allied POWs in and around Tokyo. Also, probably because athe US didn't want to completely destroy the government. They needed somebody who was still alive to surrender. |

The people we needed to agree to the surrender were there, if we had killed the Royal family they may have never given up. |

Tokyo had been utterly destroyed by a massive bombing campaign carried out under the command of Nate Twining. The number of dead and injured in the entire Kanto Plain from that bombing exceeded the totals for Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Hiroshima was a major Naval base and industrial center. Nagasaki was an important industrial center. |

that raid killed more people than either Atomic Bomb did.

I think we probably had in mind the fact that, as Colin Powell said about Iraq "Once you break it, you own it".
We were going to be the ones to come in and sweep up the pieces, so the decision was made that Tokyo would be one of the pieces left intact. |

It was foggy over Tokyo that day so they went to target #2. Hey, I'm sorry if you don't like the answer but that's the reason, they didn't have a good visual so they moved on to the next default target. It's history. |
