I knew a woman, whos family got out of East Germany and imigrated to Australia,Her father had been a POW in Russia. I never thought at the time to ask about the conditions he had gone through. The Russians didn't have many POW's.

Yes they did, the Germans as in WWII were successful initially, but it soon turned to stalemate. The only breaking point of this stalemate was the Bolshevik revolution which resulted in Russia negotiating peace with Germany.
Indeed many invasions have failed, but rarely due to the Russian military forces, but the Russian Winter. When invaded they retreating troops would destroy shelter, burn crops and poison wells meaning the invaders starved or froze to death.
The British also failed in their conquest, Mongolia on the other hand did rather well. |

German tried to invade Russia in WWI but it turned into a stalemate. When Bolshevik revolution took place in Russia; the Bolshevik negotiated a separate peace with Germany thus freed up German armed forces on the eastern front. |
