Montgomery was an excellent field commander, leader and tactician and should have remained the "Commander Allied Forces - Europe" instead of the command being split after the D-Day invasion. He was cautious, but few can say that he was too overly cautious.
General Patton was a overenthusiastic leader. He was a poor tactician and committed his troops into combat without sufficient knowledge of the enemies strengths and weaknesses, and refused to wait for co-ordinated pushes with other allied forces He stole supplies destined to other commands, especially the British and Canadians. His actions caused an untold number of unwarranted casualties amongst the US troops and especially amongst the British, the Canadians and the French. |
