Your teacher is a fool. I have never thought the US lost the most troops, not even in the top five. |

she probably didn't tell you that it was the russians that defeated germany either, did she? she may not even know the truth.
by the way that's 27 million soviet military deaths, 19 million soviet civilians. 600,000 military deaths for the usa. |

US casualties in WWII were about 300,000 killed and 300,000 wounded. At this, US ranked 9th in casualties.
Total casualties was about 60 million, about half civilians. |

Are you sure that your teacher said that?
If your teacher did, then she/he is clearly wrong.
On another point, I don't know what sort of history books some of the posters above me have been reading but anyone who has a serious interest in WW2 knows that the Soviets endured horrific losses (on the order of millions). It's a just a well known fact.
---
KonGo, even if it was WW1 (which it isn't, the asker just made a typo) the US still didn't have the highest number of casualties.

yes, you learned the truth. your teacher lied because he think that USA contribute most of all to everything significant in the world. it is his idea how world it is. You are so right that you adress different information sources to find out more.
Soviet Union was the majour force that crushed Hitler and his empire and of course price for the Victory was very high. |

History is always written by the winners, after the end of the second world war the US and The Soviet Union entered into a period of cold war. During this period the Russians were public enemy number one. As a result there efforts during the war went forgotten and in some respects were hidden for the US population.
Often we see the same sort of thing in movies, for example were are the British, Canadian, South Africa etc troops in Saving Private Ryan?
Often its a lot easier to reduce things down to simple black and white "Facts" then go to any lenght explaining all the complex relationships that made up the outcome of a war.
If you have not all ready seen it, I would strongly recommend seeing the movie "Enemy at the gate" about the defence of Stalingrad.

She probably meant soldier casualties. Alot of normal citizens probably were killed and they were probably counted in the numbers you saw. |

I guess she just did not know that USSR participated in WWII at all)
Actually USSR lost around 34 million people through WWII |

Just wondering if she mentioned the 5 million non-Jewish victims of the Holocaust. All the movies, books, etc. yet they are only a mere mention. I bet she didn't. |

welcome to the public school system. let this be a serious lesson for you. some teachers are REALLY stupid and can't pass the test they give. NEVER trust a teacher 100% |

Your teacher probably did not 'lie'.
The Soviet union did not exist during most of World War 1 (WWI).
Your link goes to Worl War 2 (WWII) |

My advice is NEVER, EVER base your opinions and what you know on what you read on Wikipedia.
Ever.
Period.
Exclamation point.
Because I did an experiment, I tellz ya.
A bogus, phoney, ickiness of an experiment.
I created my own Wikipedia on the color 'tickle me pink'.
It stayed there for 4 months.
And what was written on said webpage?
I'll tell you what was written:
"'Tickle me pink' is a color from Crayola that should not be used by children because their products r made in chyna and have lead paint in them."
FOUR MONTHS.
Ludacris, much?
Seriously. :/ |

Wiki is not a reliable source of information. Google or Yahoo a topic and look for .gov, .org, or .edu in the address.
NOT WIKIPEDIA. |

yes the highest casualities for WW2 is soviet but your teacher was probably talking about America only.
the soviet did not actually sacrificed anything, it was the disregard for life their leader (Stalin) believe in.
please read your text books and dont rely on only one source of information |

wikipedia is not a good source. your teacher is most likely correct. that is why she is a teacher |

Did you know that wikipedia is not an authority. It's written by people like you and I...
I don't know the amounts of casualties... nor do I really care, but I wouldn't really trust Wikipedia for much. |
