War with Iran - Can the French do it alone?

No, they are not even getting that close. They are currently pressing for sanctions, if not by the UN, then by the EU. Like most sane countries, they consider it a bad thing if the Irani government gets its hands on nuclear weapons.

For one, it threatens all of the Persian Gulf, where France gets the significant majority of its oil from. Remember, for years prior to this, the French, Germans and English have been negotiating with Iran for it to end its nuclear research, to no avail.

As for war, France said it must be prepared for the worst, in the event Iran does build actual nuclear weapons. But do not make the mistake of believing France would go alone - they would not. They are not the only country that has a problem with nuclear mullahs.

The French have never won a war on their own. They will go to war with Iran, but when they start losing, the US will be there to back them up. Like always.

When WW2 broke out French tanks were sturdier than Germans, and we all know what happened. Why ??? Coz the Germans were smarter.

The last real leader they had was a Corsican !!!!!

The French cannot do it alone. In fact they cannot even do anything more than an insignificant part of the work.

The first problem they will face is the fact that they have no bases in the area. Then they have the problem of their obsolete aircraft carrier with its aircraft that lack the range to make it to their targets with an effective weapons load.

Another problem they have is the fact that they have kind of P.O.'d the American people. This will make it very hard politically for them to get American military assistance.

No but like other wars in history they will botch it up and treat the people as badly as possible then leave it to the US to clean up the mess. All the while claiming it is our responsibility as part of the UN. I say we get out of the UN and let em deal with their own ineptitude.

I don't think the French could launch and maintain a sustained ground war with Iran, they could however launch some devastating airstrikes.

The French could easily dispatch the Iranians unless they knew they were coming. Then they would have the opportunity to send in a carbomb and destroy the Military Industrial Complex in France, which consists of a white flag factory. This would thoroughly cripple the French forces... allowing Iran to occupy France.

OK, I'm kidding... seriously, I'd think England would back France after the soldier-kidnap incident. Between those two and perhaps Israeli support... they can get the job done with minimal to no support from us.

Who?. The French?. They are only full of talk, but they cannot walk the walk.

"We are prepared for war!". That's what the French are now saying to Iran.

They said exactly those same words in 1940. They have been preparing and re-inforcing the Maginot Line for two years, and then when everything was completed, they declared "We are ready for war against the Germans!". Well, as history had shown, Hitler just whooped the French in only three weeks. The French laid down their arms and surrendered without giving a considerable fight. They only got their liberation after the Allied forces landed in Normandy. When Germany finally surrendered, the French were behaving as if they were the ones who defeated the Germans. When Germany's Intrument of Surrender document was being signed by the Allies, the French complained why only the Americans/British/Canadians/Russians are putting their signatures on the document. The French wanted their own signatures included in the document too, claiming that they are also members of the Allied Powers. When Germany was being partitioned into Allied zones of occupation, the French again complained on why the French zone of occupation is smaller than the other Allied zones. When the United Nations was being established in 1946, the French yet compained again. They kept arguing with the Allies on the drafting of the by-laws of the UN charter. This is how bellicose the French were when it comes to talking.

Then came Indo-China. The French refused to grant independence to Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. The British had already granted independence to many of its colonies (Burma, India, and others), the Dutch to Indonesia, the US to the Philippines. But the French wanted to hold on to its colonies. The Vietnamese resorted to armed struggle to be free from French rule. This escalated into a wider conflict that resulted in the French Army's defeat at Dien Bien Phu. Unable to carry the war further, the French asked for American help, thus starting the US involvement in Vietnam. Later on, the French troops pulled out of Vietnam, leaving the Americans to take responsibility of the war.

And now, the French are saber-rattling and drum-beating for a war with Iran. Do they think that they can beat Iran?. If the French weren't able to win the war against the bare-footed and ill-equipped Vietnamese guerillas, how confident are they to win against Iran?. It looks like the French wanted to rebuild and re-assert their long-lost global influence. But can their economy afford it?. At the moment, the French got the highest unemployment rate in Western Europe, and their per-capita income doesn't look impressive. Just before their last presidential elections, majority of the French protested when the government wanted to change the 35-hours per week work schedule to 40-hours per week, which is the norm in the whole EU. This became a major political issue that gave more votes to Sarkozy.

That's the nature of the Frenchman's psyche. He'll do things only when it's easy. But when it comes to "blood and toil", he gives-up easily.

So, are the French ready and prepared for a long war with Iran, in the same way that is happening now in Iraq?. I don't think so.

Please don't make me laugh!...Our girl scouts have better chances of doing it alone than the French. The French wouldn't be able to stop a food fight in a school cafeteria with out the U.S. and UK backing them up.

it is very possible but if they actually do go to war then they will not be alone. we will commit what we can and so will other countries and if iran is attacked it will some of iraqs problem because the insurgents will not be as able to use iran as a money and staging source. i think that we should back them up all the way.

I wouldn't be surprised. They were a kick-butt empire, once. Generally, instances where the French are called cowardly or weak can be attributed to their GOVERNMENT (as during WW2), not to the army, which needs the government's approval to fight. Currently, they've got a fairly tough leader in Sarko, so... who knows?

I doubt it. They will be locked in the same guerilla failures the US is in with Iraq.

As to the poster who says France never won a battle that counts, maybe you should look deeper. There were many victories going back to the Romans, including Hastings, Montelle, Orleans, Algeria, Marne, Ypres, Belleau Wood, Koufra, Cote d'Ivoire ...
