Was any of the destruction that happened in Lebanon over the past month worth it? If yes, why?

I say yes, and here's the reason why. Israel actually had enough balls to go after Hezbollah, a known terrorist organization. It is sad that innocent people had to die, but there are times when a nation must say that they've had enough.

No it most definitely was not! It has achieved nothing part from heightened tension, anger, bitterness and hatred. It has made people in Lebanon feel abandoned by the whole world as no one did anything to stop what was happening. Israel lost this and they feel very embittered about it. They fet convinced they were going to go in and win, win, win. They didn't and worse even realise now that most countries they felt friendly towards them have had enough of their raids and destruction, know they simply cannot go on doing just what they want to do whenever they elect to do so. But Lebanon has been destroyed before, rebuilt before and will again be rebuilt. Sadly, those evacuated, those who lost loved ones in the bombings will not think too much about peace and reconciliation, instead they'll hate the Israelis more than ever. So all israel has achieved is to turn more and more people against them and nothing else.

YES its worth it. Unfortunately I don't really think it will change much over there. I would liken it to punitive damages in a court of law. If Lebanon can't control their borders, and the U.N. can't do anything(what a suprise)Then what choice but to defend itself does Israel have? I see the U.N. will try again. You see hezzbolah is willing to abide by the treaty. Oh wait, no they're not, they already said so. So if the U.N. ,Lebanon, and the French(oh no this sounds like a lose -lose situation) fail to get the troops to the border I'm sure the fighting will continue or start again. It will be worth it in the long run. Israel has not been in Lebanon since 2000 and only went in to get rid of the terrorists hezzbolah so they can live peacefully next to Lebanon. It is hezzbolah that is the problem there. They are a terroist militia. they aren't even Lebanese (for the most part) they are backed by iran and syria. What does that have to do with Lebanon? Other than Iran watns Islamic rule there too. They (iran/syria) don't want any democracy in the area. So they send in hezzbolah to stop the progress. Then try to put the blame on Israel.

for Israel and USA of course it didn't worth it because they didn't achieve what they wanted which is to destroy Hezbollah, Israel lost many soldiers and headed to killing civilians because it couldn't reach Hezbollah and kept destroying Lebanon's infrastructure to put pressure on the Lebanese government to turn against Hezbollah
Hezbollah achieved a strategic history and it isn't a terrorist organization, it defended its country with total bravery, terrorists kill innocents and have no aim but terrify people but Hezbollah served its country with total Magnanimity and is now helping the Lebanese people to reconstruct their destroyed homes

maybe for israel it was worth it, depends what side you are on, there is a good interview on google video bout this with george galloway, watch it and learn about both sides of this conflict

No, because on the political front, we're right back where we started. Neither party has achieved its goals (which personally, I think can be better achieved thru dialogue).
On the national front, we've been bombed back to the stone age.
On the economic front... I'm terrified of even thinking about it.

Nothing to say?

Depends on who for. There is profiteering in every war.

The US taxpayer is already handing over billions to israel every year.

Noodle
OH yes of course if was. How would the American arms industry survive without Israel bombing the **** out of people. The Iraq war has calmed a bit as with Afghanistan so it was just a profit making exercise. Did you not see how we rushed to end it!!!

no destruction of any civilisations is never worth it.
what ever the side you wish to take, for me the children are the ones put into chaos, poverty and forced into a mind set of hatred

archivist_47
None of the destruction was necessary. Israel must pay for the rebuilding of Lebanon's infrastructure. But of course they won't because all the targets they hit were military, weren't they - milk factories, petrol stations, bridges, Red Cross convoys, civilian flats and houses!?

Among the things that were disclosed are:

1. The Israeli Army can find you if you play according to the rules. If you cheat, the Israeli Army will still find many of you.

2. Hiding behind the skirts of women and children only confirms that Hezbollah are lousy fighters and seem to be more cowardly than expected.

3. Hezbollah has no honor. They seem to be very brave fighting women and children and tied up prisoners but not so brave when they meet real men.

4. Hezbollah enjoys killing non-combatants. this says something about what they are.

5. Hezbollah can't aim worth a damn. They just shoot and hope it hits something. The Israeli can pin-point their shots and if the Hezzies shoot and sit for 1 minute they will get clobbered.

6. On a one-to-one basis the Israeli Army will clean the clocks of any number of Hezbollah.

The destruction was directly the result of Hezbollah fighting methods. Hiding in houses, hospitals, churches, etc forced the Israeli Army to fire on those structures. Hiding behind women's skirts may have contributed to a lot of the loss of non-combatant lives.

no.

it will give Americans for jobs to replenish the Israeli hardware

phe_03
yes. It's worth it because Hezbullah (can't spell it, or say it really) needs to not send suicide bombers over the border and kill innocents. Also, Lebanon is responsible and liable for the actions of the military forces that fall within their government. again Hezbullah. I think the war needs to be settled soon, but Hezbullah won't stop what they set out to do. The want everyone to feel sorry for them, when in fact they brought it upon themselves. If someone straight out slapped the **** out you, you would be ready to argue and fight with that person. It's a bigger mess and fight when it involves two countries.

MAFOKOCHIZHI
Of course it is not worth it. the only regret is that lives have been lost on both sides and they later have to do what they failed to do in the first instance; dialogue.

there is growing tremendous support for hizbollah in the middle east both politically and militarily. countries like Saudi Arabis is already donating billions of dolars to the lebanese to reconstruct their country and their economy. they have also eandeared themselves to the hearts of many lebanese and muslims worldwide that indeed Israel is not invincible with all its military arsenal.

and i dont know if the israelis or their American godfathers noted this; hizbollah is a rebel group supported by iran and syria, not the syrian and iranian military force itself. think of israel carrying out night raids on this countries for such flimsy excuses they have done that before in the past and what do you think would be the repercussion. it could simply mean the extinction of the state of isreal.

There is no justification for what Israel did in Lebanon. Israel needs to find a different solution. They have been fighting for 60 years. How many more years do we all have to suffer before they see the light. MY advice is for Israel to give all the land back to Palestine.

le_coupe
Yeah, do you know how much money the US and UK will make by selling replacement munitions to Israel?!?

(And also selling them to various other 'unstable' political factions through the back door!)

It seems to have woken up the Lebanese people that they have to do something about the violent idiot Hezbos in their midst, unless they have some sick desire to die under IDF bombs. Their tolerance for and tacit approval of the terrorist methods of the Hezbos led to this destruction. And save for the obvious restraint Israel was using, the Lebanese destruction would have been a lot worse.

Now, it seems that the Hezbos will be supplanted on the Israeli border by Lebanese Army and a UN force.

However, I feel that the Israelis will not hold back when [not if] the cease-fire is violated by the Hezbos. Nor should they.
