My finance is looking at different branches in the military, to decide which to join. He was to go into intelligence, possibly career or fbi/cia once he is done. We have spoken to people in the military and recruiters. He was leaning to marines, but the navy recruiter told him that he would never have to go to Iraq, unless he volunteered? Is this true I can't find it any where online, and are friend in the Marines said that could never happen if he was told he has to go then he would have to even with out volunteering? anyone know? Additional Details This was the navy recruiter who said iraq is all volunteer

To date there have been 94 Sailors killed in action in the middle east..HMMM..Im gonna guess they were present when they got killed..
http://icasualties.org/oif/USDeathsByService.aspx
All branches deploy to the middle east..Of course the Navy deploys on ships at sea and they are also on the ground in the middle east..Some MOS's will have you on the sand as opposed to on a ship..
If any recruiter says that Iraq is all volunteer than technically he is not lying because the military is all volunteer..Iraq is not voulenteer..If your unit goes than guess what? So will you.. |

I have even served in a landlocked country like in Afghanistan for almost a year (no, I DID NOT volunteer). Mr. John S., who claimed to have served in the Navy, but yet, it seems that he did not learn much about other people's jobs in the Navy. Their are Navy personnel who are still in Afghanistan and of course, Iraq (SEALs, EOD's, SEABEE's, HM's, MA's, and others who serve under the Joint Operation Command or Special Operation Command). Even though, your husband's chance of actually being on the ground as an intel is slim, but there is still a chance. Don't just listen to the recruiter. |

Its the military, dont join not to go to war during a time when our country is at war....and no, I met some Navy guys when I was in Iraq and they didn't volunteer. I dont know if it was their MOS, or if they were reserves.. |

He can be VolunTOLD meaning that you are told you have to volunteer to go IA somewhere. It isn't just Iraq it could also mean Djibouti, Africa, Bahrain, Afghanistan, etc...
There is a possibility he will go but it is going to depend on what he does and what they need at the time. Some never go while others do. |

incorrect. IA is a fact of Navy life now. heck, it's being incorporated into the rotation of most RL Officers in between duty stations.
they ask for volunteers first. if no one does, then you are voluntold. this is ESPECIALLY true if he goes into INTEL. |

Once in the military, you become GI, goverment issue, they can send you any where anytime. Wants to get in the FBI, go to college. |

Once you are sworn into the military they can and will do whatever they deem best for the military, no matter what the recruiter says. |

the recruiter did not lie if his words were "you never go to iraq unless you volunteer" however!!!! once you sign the dotted line to any branch...you have just volunteered. why someone would want to join the military but think they won't go to war though...is way beyond me. |

There is no guarantee. Every branch uses the philosophy of "the needs of the service" which trumps the desire of the individual. If he gets intelligence, he could be assigned to a unit in Iraq. He could even be working with another service. Going Marine would make going to Iraq very likely.
I was a Navy Hospital Corpsman with the Marines in Viet Nam in 1967. It was an honor to be with them. Some people who volunteered to go, never seemed to go there. Others would tried to avoid it wound up there. |

Navy personnel in the construction, explosive ordnance, special operations and medical fields serve in Iraq. We have even had a Supply Corps officer die in a terrorist bombing in Baghdad.
The Marines have been there since March of 2003. Though some of the units will be redeployed to Afghanistan, the Marines will still be in Iraq in some capacity or another.
Now, what you two need to do is to figure out how many adult males 18-26 died in the U.S. since March 19, 2003 in accidents, suicides and homicides and compare that to the number who were killed in Iraq. You might decide to put a down payment on a condo in Baghdad. |

The Navy sends you where they want to,but,Navy personnel serve on ships and do not fight on shore.Unless of course they are Navy Seals or Seabeas. These are the only jobs the Navy has that get put into ground combat situations. If he does get sent to Iraq aboard a ship he will never have to walk down a street in Falluja unless he wants to.I was in the Navy for the first gulf war and I never saw any fighting up close. The ship I was on did fire several missiles though. |
