We have never had a nuclear war and yet we have had the bomb for over 50 years. How much longer will it be?

We've come real close twice that I'm aware of, one completely by accident. It was in the 80's when a Swedish atmospheric study rocket was launched, somewhere in the shuffle the Russian military didn't get the notification of the launch and thought it was an attack from the US. They were preparing a return strike when the notification was found and they stood down.

After the cold war documents were declassified that showed the Russian government planned to initiate a nuclear first strike of the US if the US invaded Cuba -- which was exactly what Kennedy's advisers were telling him to do. Fortunately he learned his lesson about the poor quality of their advice in the Bay of Pigs and elected for a naval blockade of Cuba instead.

Michael, Dean is correct an atomic bomb is a nuclear weapon, the explosion is the uncontrolled release of energy from splitting the nucleus of a uranium or possibly plutonium. Nuclear fission.

What you are referring to as nuclear is commonly called the hydrogen bomb or H-Bomb. It's explosion comes from the energy released as the nucleus of 2 hydrogen atoms fuse to form helium. Nuclear fusion.

Both are nuclear weapons, though the H-Bomb is much more devastating.

what did you use to calculate the certainty of a Nuclear War? if it's as you say a mathematical certainty then you ought to know when it will happen.
for those of you answering yes we have had a nuclear war no we haven't. the dropping of two Atomic bombs during WW II does not constitute a Nuclear war by any means.

Not a nuclear war, but for sure, some terorist group is going to detonate a nuclear bomb (curtesy of the USSR) or "dirty" bomb within the next year or two at most.
Thee is also an outside chance that India an Pakistan may decide to loose a few off during one of their spats or that Iran gets so close to developing their own Nuke that Israel decides that the whole country needs a tan and a new glass factory LOL

As so many of your answerers have pointed out, we have already had a nuclear war. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the targets.

In the first Nuclear war, the bombs used were Atom bombs. Since then we have progressed(?) to Hydrogen bombs, at least, and I believe that a Plutonium bomb is now available. All of these weapons are NUCLEAR Fission devices.

This does not answer your question, but it does attempt to correct some of your less knowledgeable statements.

Incidentally, Nagasaki and Hiroshima are thriving cities after only 50+ years from the detonations, so where do you get you 200 year figure.

Although many people thinks nuclear war is forbidden by puppet organizations like UN, the conditions are now set for a large-scale use of nuclear weapons.The exact moment of their use is uncertain.But they will be used.Just look carefully at the Middle East situation. Just because we have a bomb doesn't really mean we have to use it, again such disasters like Hiroshima and Nagasaki were pointless as they killed numerous innocent civilians and all it it accomplished for America was yes fear, but also they gained an enemy.

Now we tend to use politics more than anything to attempt to prevent any tense international relations. We still fight using men and women who are following answers and not necessarily their hearts.

I personally think the time that one nation fought another using their civilians (e.g. conscription) is and should always remain out of the question. As for a nuclear war...there is no point, you kill alot of innocent people and it will always remain more of a threat than a weapon in warfare.

y so we all can die i am going to fight in a few week and i think so i know what to expect if we have a nuclear war ever one will have a reason to use them and every one will use them and the world encludeing us you dumb ***
