Weaken the Military and put money into Universal Healthcare?

We can have universal health care and still have a strong military. Iraq costs 10 Billion dollars per month.

Our Coast Guard just bought and entire fleet of boats that are unseaworthly and have radios that don't work when they get wet. If we got the money back we could have health-care. One Congressman proposed giving the boats to the south Americans, unfortunately the Coast Guard stated the boats are so poorly built that they would sink on the voyage down.,

You don't have to sacrifice one for the other. You have to do things right.

I don't see why we have to substitute one for the other. I firmly believe that all Americans should be entitled to health care. If, in theory, we should be working as a nation toward more of a utopia of sorts, wouldn't that naturally include universal health care? Anyway, that's little off topic. We could easily maintain both a strong military and a better health care system in this country if we, as a nation, would stop being so narrow minded. We tend to focus all of our attention on the one crisis at hand instead of balancing our attention toward all things important. You can see it so clearly in the current presidential campaigns. 6 months ago all anyone, candidates and constituents, would talk about was the Iraq war. Now all anyone talks about is the economy. Aren't they both important? Wasn't the economy just as important 6 months ago and vice versa? The problem is that if we address health care, we'll surely ONLY address health care and let everyone else wither. I honestly don't have a real solution on how to solve this as a nation but I firmly believe that the resources exist to maintain both a strong military and a strong health care system. Hell, if we put a year's worth of what we've been throwing at Iraq into the Social Security system, the Social Security crisis that again, no one seems to be paying attention to anymore, would be nonexistent.

I agree, we do need to improve health care, but weakening the military to do it is the wrong thing to do. We need to keep a strong military. One way to maybe help with health care would be to cut out all the pork barrel spending that is very high.

Or, you could move to one of those countries you think has better health care. The first thing you will find out is how much it will cost you and the second thing you will find out is how long it takes to get any medical attention: take note I did not say appropriate or adequate medical attention---and that's the thrid thing you will have concerns about.

As for a weaker military! Are you crazy? There are a lot of countries out there that do not like us!

Michael Moore? If you put much weight on what Michael Moore says, you need to seriously consider getting re-educated at an institution that teaches you how to think instead of what to think.

The USA doesn't have to make emenies overseas, we simply have to react to the things foreigh countries, and terrorists, are trying to do to us: it's a full time job! A job which, by the way, demands a lot of dipomatic pressure and, sometimes, requires the utilization of either covert special ops missions or our large and very well trained military to protect our national security and national interests.

Good health care is expensive. One reason wealthy people from all over the world come here, to the USA, for health care is that it is, so far, very good, expensive, but far better than that offered to them by the government programs in their countries, and this includes Canada.

And finally, the United Nations (UN) is not what I'd refer to as a reliable entity with respect to anything. The UN appears to be representative politicians each more concerned about their own country's self serving interest than adhering to the mandate of their agenda including the illegal conduct of member nations. I point to their indecision regarding Iraq as only one instance of many; and thereby can rest my case with confidence there can be no reasonable dispute offered to the contrary.

it is dangerous to weaken our defense forces. Health care could be improved by americans taking better care of themselves. He have a bid health problem from obesity, drug and alcohol abuse, smoking wetc. Things that could be prevented. When the system is abused those that really need help don't get it. Put heavy tax on junk food, tobacco ,booze etc and give to preventative health care.

OVER use is the single largest cause of cost, followed by "defensive medicine" and the LARGE premiums the medical community pays because WE sue over "hot coffee" in the lap.

Socialism WILL cure some of these problems. Over use will go away as you will have to wait and wait and wait. Defensive medicine will go away as the Doctors won't be making enough for the sharks circle them any more. The cost of "high tech" will go as it will no longer be affordable to the "public system".

Take 2 aspirin and go away will be the new mantra!

ya we should...especially our nuclear arsenals...its very unlikely for us to throw some nukes at another countries right?so whats the point of spending huge bucks on them researching producing and maintaining them?the nukes are wasting the tax payers' money

universal healthcare is a mess, in Canada I've heard where you'd have to wait a week to be treated after being rushed to the ER with a broken arm. If the gov't manages healthcare it will be awful, prepare for years long waits, less hospital staff, with gov't subsidies healthcare costs will rise tremendously and that will be reflected in astronomical tax increases.

I heard from someone who lives in Canada (where they have universal health care) that is takes 6 months to get a doctor's appointment. But again it's apples to oranges - you can't assume that taking money from the defense budget would mean an increased budget for healthcare. Here's an idea - cut back on taxes so people can use the money that they earn to pay for their own healthcare.

You are comparing apples and oranges. The health care system and the military are two separate and different problems.

Health care should be affordable. Our medical system has the latest in technology and medications. What we need to do is make Medicaid and medicare more cost efficient. Make the hospitals and doctors accept those payments as total payments, so people do not need supplemental insurance. Streamline the system. The government should not run the show. If the government would stay out of it, the health care system would eventually figure out how to keep its own health costs as low as possible.

The military is a necessary part of any country's life. Even Switzerland which is a neutral country has one of the strongest militaries in Europe. We are the last superpower left on Earth and need to be just that, our standard of living depends on that. The military should remain strong and effective. Let the suppliers bear the cost of Research and Development. They also should be responsible for ensuring that what was ordered was delivered. If the ships bought by the Coast Guard are not worth a penny, then make the companies that built them fix them for free. As for fighting 3 wars simultaneously, in the 50's through the 80's we were prepared to fight two major wars and a police action at the same time. During the Vietnam war we never reached a total of 4,000,000 service men. Now we have half of that.

You can have your cake and eat it too. Stay away from health care except as noted. Fix military procurement policies. When these two things are accomplished we will have an even better health care system then we have now and a stronger military.

"Should we weaken the military and stregthen our citizens before we are overtaken by other nations?" What a ridiculous statement which is exactly what this question is. The other Western countries don't have better health care, they have more equitable health care. Cancer survival rates are superior in the U.S. to socialized medicine nations like Britain although you won't hear that from good old Mikey. The U.N. is a farce. Its ruling are a joke and it has nations like Cuba and Sudan running the Human Rights Commission. Trusting it is like trusting the Nigerian email scammers. Weakening our military is a horrible idea. We aren't making enemies with a powerful military but rather through incompetent CIVILIAN leadership that seeks to nation build. Universal healthcare is a massive drain on the economy and only provides benefits to the lower classes who already have some kind of socialized medicine (Medicaid, Medicare) in place.
