If the 5.56x45 mm NATO round translates roughly to .223, then what does 7.62x51 mm NATO round translate to? Websites to convertions would be appreciated. and if i was wrong in anything listed above, then dont hesitate so say so!

The military version of the 5.56x45 is not quite the .223 just as the 7.62x51 is not quite the .308. The one exception is the 7.62x63, more commonly known as the .30-06 which is the same civilian, military, NATO or US Standard.
The reason for this is simple - there are always military surplus rifles that reach the civilian market and Remington (.223) and Winchester (.308) wanted to capitalize on this market. The result was changing the cartrige ever so slightly that it would still shoot out of the surplus rifles.
As displayed by the website listed, the difference is the headspacing, max psi and cartridge case thickness.
The only other rounds similar to this (that can be fired out of the same pistol/rifle) are the .38 Special and the .357 Mag (only .38 in .357) and rounds that have undergone some sort of designation change - such as the .44 WCF to the .44-40 and the .32 WCF to the .32-20.
Most other rounds are known only by their NATO equivalency (9mm) or their US Standard (45 ACP) throughout the world. |

NATO ammo is generally loaded hotter than commercial stuff, as well. There are some slight chamber differences between a 5.56 NATO and a .223 Remington. If you have a gun chambered in 5.56, like most AR-15 clones, you can shoot either, but you shouldn't fire 5.56 surplus ammo out of a standard .223 Remington.
The same goes for pistol ammo--I've seen some 9X19mm NATO that is probably on par with +p+ US ammo. |
