What's the best way to tell your parents you plan on joining the military?

What's the best way to tell your parents you plan on joining the military?

My father is supportive but a tad reluctant... my mom would FLIP out especially since I will be graduating from college in May. I won't be enlisting... I'll be doing Marine Corps OCS but she still thinks no matter what happens I'll wind up in Iraq.

You might end up in Iraq, but women are not in Infantry. I can't think of a female being killed in Iraq, not to say there hasn't been, but the mass of casualties comes from the Infantry Marines and they are 100% men (women aren't allowed to serve in the infantry.) Infantry is first to fight, last if ever to leave and they are the ones who have to win. Tell your mom that the General over MCRD (Marine Corps Recruit Depot) in San Diego, IS A WOMAN. One last thing to put icing on this. I can get you free airfare for your parents to attend your graduation from boot camp at Parris Island. You just have to call me before you join. Call me at (817) 371-5120 or email from my profile.

Just tell them honestly and that you want to serve your country. Tell them the benefits, why you want to join. You probably will end up in Iraq, you have to be prepared for that.

Thanks for serving our country and I wish you and all our boys (and girls) fighting for our country the best of luck. It does not go unnoticed and is appreciated!!

Call em from boot camp, thats what I did. Got tired of them saying "If you don't like our rules join the military and go to Viet Nam." I think Mom wet herself when I called. Wet herself again when I told them I volunteered to go to Nam and had turned down orders to Germany.

I went to a Recruiter's Office without telling my parents. I called my mom while I was at the office and told her I wanted to become a United States Marine. She almost cried. The next thing I know we all sat down and talked and signed papers and then I was taken to MEPS for my physical. I plan to go to Marine Recruit Training June 23rd. Good Luck man.

You're about to Join the Marines, Be Proud of that decision! First off, let me say Thanks for your decision to Serve, Second I would sit your parents down and explain to them all the reasons why you're serving, help them to see beyond the war and let them understand the pride that comes from serving your country. People always talk about winding up in Iraq. Yes, we're at war and everyone that joins the military should be aware of that but even if we weren't at war you would have been eligible for deployments all over the world. That's what being in the military is all about. So congrats on your decision and I wish you the best of luck!

Chances are that you will be assigned to Iraq or Afghanistan. This is a war with no natural stopping place. That aside you need to tell the folks that you intend to be a marine officer. Tell them straight out. Give them a date certain that you plan to begin training. There are as many reasons for a person to want to serve as there are people that serve. Your reason, whatever it is is valid. You can state it, but there's no need to explain it. Your mom will accept that. Semper Fi!

Just sit them down and be honest. Explain your plan.

Send mom and dad a photo from the war zone.

Even as an officer, you will wind up deploying. You may not be deploying to Iraq though, you may end up going to Afghanistan, or even Iran the way things are going there. I just graduated basic training from the USMC, It was an experience, it was challenging, but looking back it was actually kind of easy.

Anyway, my suggestion on telling your parents is simple. Call your local recruiter. Ask them to sit down with you and your parents so they can ask him/her questions. It's the way to go, so you're not trying to explain things you don't know for sure. It's what I did, and my mom was totally supportive.

Are you an adult? Then just be honest with them. That is always best.

I believe you owe it to your parents to be upfront with them, after a dinner sit in the living room with them and explain to them why you want to join. Let them know what your goals are in the military and in life. Let them know that you will do your very best to make them proud, it is a very noble profession should you stay for as long as I have. The Marines has a lot to offer, just like the other services do. Should you be sent to Iraq or Afghanistan, they will take care of you and train you well before you go "boots on ground!'
Good luck with your decision!

with a life insurance plan; but more importantly, a health insurance plan.

just tell them straight up...your mom is right, you will end up in iraq or afghanistan...

You will. Dont play yourself. Just because your an officer doesnt mean your safe. But as for the parents, sit them down and be strait, lying gets you no where.

I think it's best to leave it until your local representative gives them a folded up flag and his condolences...

'I'm sorry for your loss Mr & Mrs [insert name here] but at least you get cheap oil.. that must count for something'

At least then they won't be worrying about what MIGHT happen to you.
