I am in the National Guard. My unit is reclassing from 11B to 19D. I leave Monday for 19D school and just wanted to know the differences and what to expect.

The Job of the Cavalry is to:
Gain and Maintain Contact with the Enemy.
That doesn't mean find them and start shooting at them.
It means find them, and keep eyes on them so that the main body, which is larger, slower moving and more vulnerable, has a chance to maneuver into position for the Kill
Depending on the type of organization you may be in Up-Armor HMMWV's, Bradleys or Strykers......or on foot.
The three basic types of recon are Zone, Area and Route.
you should focus on Map Reading, Call for Fire and Radio Procedures.
Also, if your not already Bradley Qualified? Have your unit send you to the Scout Commanders Course in Smyrna Tenn at the Volunteer training site.
It's laid back and casual, but the instructors all have years of experience (some going as far back as straight A2 versions) and it will be worth it. plus, Nashville is 20 minutes away. |

the mission of Calvary is to:
ID the enemy positions
draw out the main forces
react quickly to reinforce infantry positions that are in danger of being over run.
Calvary are not suppose to go out and engage the enemy, unless they have forces that are vastly superior to the enemy.
If you look at old cowboy movies, they used to call in the Calvary when the forces were getting beat down. basically the same thing now. also they would show the horse Calvary trailing the enemy, same thing.
General Custer broke the rules of Calvary, and you see what happen to him. he did the right thing in locating the enemy, but he messed up when he fixed the position and didn't withdraw to a safe distance to allow regular infantry to engage. at that point his Calvary could have reacted to re enforce the infantry were needed. |

if you get deployed there wont really be a difference. you will do a lot of 11b type patrols and other 11b stuff. in the wars we fight today, there isnt really a whole lot a scout can do other than drive around and wait to get shot at. that goes for alot of combat jobs |

The skill set cross over is very similar. I am assuming you are in an Infantry Brigade. The primary difference is (unless you were your Infantry's D Co (Weapons)) that you will be primarily mounted from here on out. Your new C Troop will be the primary dismounted scouts and they will remain 11Bs. If you are in a heavy Brigade, you'll switch to M3 Bradleys instead of M2 and learn more about mounted recon. Once you deploy, you'll be doing the same work as any other combat arms unit depending on your assignment. It won't really be Cavalry Specific. |

For detailed insight to the world of cavalry scouts, come to their (unofficial) online home at http://www.cavalryscouts.com
In the online forums, there is a whole section written by a former 19D OSUT drill sergeant that describes in detail the MOS training you will be undergoing, what to expect, what to bring, and what you will learn.
Good luck. |

Which means cav scout rides in humvees (little or no armor) and infantry rides in armoured vehicles and in force... larger unit strength instead of four-eight humvees riding around the desert lol.
You should check out Generation Kill which follows marine "scouts" |

The infantry is the term to describe soldiers using hand guns, rifles, automatic rifles in units such as platoons, companys, battalions, regiments, etc. The infantry also has specialized units such as reconaisance, snipers, etc. CavScouts are Cavalary units. Originally, they were horse mounted soldiers. The day of the horse soldier is past but now we have Tank Units (mechanized cavalary), and Air Calvary units (soldiers utilizing predominately helocopters). A Calvary Scout is a specialized member/members of a calvary unit that act as reconaisance gatherers for their unit. They are considered the eyes and ears of a calvary unit. |

the difference is that scouts are to collect info, by snooping around, asking questions, or just driving around and being seen to draw out creeps in which to punch holes in with machine guns. Usually less running and low crawling than in infantry units. No eight man stacks in the cav. Less failed drug tests. Infantry is to look for people to kill, gain fire superiority, and win through attrition... every time.. |
