The US was instrumental, but also came in late. I hate to use a wrestling metaphore, of all things, but it's like being the last one in the ring in a Battle Royale. You're fresh, everyone else is already getting worn out. But since the US would have gotten it handed to them without the help of the Allies, you certainly can't say the US won single handed. |

No single country "won" the war for the Allies. |

actually it was russia who stopped them and turned the tide, we followed up and finished it. |

i believe you could make an argument for any of the first three. britain survived after france fell, giving the allies a launching point for attacking western europe (without which dday would not have happened) and occupying germany's attention in africa as well. america provided much of the material and men that ended up winning the war, but we didn't have any real effect until the middle of 1944, almost 5 years into the war. america actually was a major world power, despite what the person above said. and the ussr held up the majority of germany's troops and equipment from 1941 to the end. they sustained huge casualties and still managed to take berlin |

The UK and her commonwealth countries was instrumental from the start of the war and tried to stay off an all out domination of Europe. The USA came in years later and only after they were directly attacked. |

I agree with Karlroger & Robert s
I worry about the level of education in the USA regarding history if some of the other answeres are to be believed. |

The key is we were ALLIES !! The USA provided the material, Russia provided the stamina, France provided the pity-factor, and the United Kingdom provided is the BEST quotable lines (Thank you Winston!). China was a mess in it's own civil war, but the ALLIES won.

karlroger and c_million pretty much got it right.
Yes American did supply a lot in material, but they didn't do it for nothing. They drained Britain dry!
The Americans need to stop living in the world of Spielberg and Hollywood!
For me Russia was the deciding factor! |

Yeah read a history book, see how the US hung back until the rest of the world was on it's knees. Profit hungry bas tards. As always looking to gain an edge by destabilising the rest of the world
It was in the end a joint effort, but I refuse to give credit to the US, they could have avoided so much pain and suffering if they'd given a crap and joined in earlier |

It was a joint effort but most of the hard work had been done in Europe before Germany declared war on the USA |

Nobody expected much from America at the time. We were this backwater little country who had never been thought of as a world military force. According to Europe and the U.K.
American assets were natural resources, ability to crank out weapons and vehicles, and, great heart in their armed forces.
I like to think they still have that. |

I don't know what they won - freedom from a dictatorship, perhaps.
Do you mean 'which' countries won WW2? |

If the RAF and British Army hadn't done the hard part before you guys jumped in to take the glory, we'd all be wearing pencil moustaches and walking like we had a rod up the jacksie. |

USSR gutted the wermacht. Of course you would never know that from reading US history books. |

It was a joint effort I think you will find.
Certainly wasn't America single handedly.
But then they were good at destroying stuff and carried that 'expertise' through to the Gulf war. My cousin served in 3 Para in the recent Gulf war and he watched an American tank shoot down a British helicoptor. Then he watched as the British helicoptor pilot jumped out of the wreckage, pulled the tank commander out and beat seven shades of cack out of him.
Let's celibrate by having a good old-fashioned conspiracy! |

Some correspondents have studied history and have got the correctly balanced answers. As is usual the Americans are blinkered and biased in their assumptions but hey we are up to or ears in it in Iraq supporting them so lets be generous and let that pass. |

America god bless them !I know we did a good job before they came in but without them and their resources Hitler would have walked in we wouldn't have stood a chance without them. |

russia made the sacrifice that enabled the western invasions[Italy and Normandy],they bled the germans dry between late 41 and june 44 .The troops they tied up on the Eastern front made sure that other allied troops didnt have to die .Point of note for present politics Stalins pact with the devil only gave Hitler the incentive to attack him .Lets not make the same mistake r.e. n.korea and iran. |

No matter how many were the allies....Adolf Hitler(German) won the war physiologically. |

Uh, gee, the russians were getting their as*es whiped before we came in, Britain was getting bombed into ashes and losing all their shipping to submarines, I'd say America is a no brainer here. |
