I couldn't tell you what the best is, but my favorite is probably Band of Brothers. I know that wasn't exactly a movie, but whats not to love? |

The movie "A Bridge Too Far" hasn't been mentioned yet. I think all things considered it is the best.
The main reason I think so is that the more I learn of the actual event it tells about, the more precise I realize the movie actually is. It covers the planning of a huge operation which failed, the heroism of the people charged with its execution, most of whom knew it was doomed to failure, and the political aftermath (or lack thereof) of this enormous error.
Much of the dialogue is the actual words of the people involved.
It's well worth watching several times. It presents the subject with greater accuracy than any other movie I've seen. |

The most realistic portrayal of boot camp was in Full Metal Jacket. I also like Saving Private Ryan, the opening scene at Omaha is awesome! I like The Thin Red Line too, a little slow to get to the point though. Also Once We Were Soldiers(young) is fairly realistic. (Of Mel Gibson is great anything he does) And I watch The Patriot over and over. |

Blackhawk down was great. But Jarhead was pretty realistic as far as the doing stupid stuff out of boredom and being worried about things going on at home went. |

All of the above were great movies. I'd like to add Platoon. An amazing character study of how war can change someone from an idealistist to a realist and Sink the Bismark for it's typiclly British realism. |

Jarhead captured the down times of combat perfectly as well as the military humor, also Black Hawk Down was right on about the military value system of never leaving a fallen battle buddy behind. |
