What Do You Think of the Slogan: " You Can't Support The Troops Without Supporting the Mission?" (In Iraq)

It is inaccurate. I have fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom myself. I support the troops that serve - past, present, and future. At the same time, I do not support the war in Iraq. I fought in this war because it was my job. When I enlisted in the service I swore to obey the orders of those appointed over me. I was ordered to deploy, so I fulfilled my obligation and did as I was told.

I think it's crap! That's my personal opinion. I will support my husband when he goes to Iraq in March but I DO NOT support the mission. But to go into that detail would be to start a big debate of my own political views. So, I will send him care packages, I will be home for his calls, I will return the emails, but I don't like the fact that he even needs to be there.

How can you possibly support our troops without supporting their mission?

I totally agree with uhgrant1.

I find no comfort in someone telling me they support me and my husband but not the mission. I don't need to feel worse when he's gone, saying nothing or just stopping at "I support the troops" is fine, but when one adds "but not the war" it brings a much different feeling.

Hasn't anyone ever heard of the saying "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all." Yes we all have the "right" to say whatever, but that doesn't make it the right thing to say.

I understand what most probably mean is "I hope he doesn't die" that's just not what I hear, and even if it was it's not something I want to hear. I mean, I don't want to hear that someone is thinking he's going to die. I don't need that. I don't say it to people about to get into a car (which has a higher death rate than Iraq) so why say it to someone in the military? The military is not a death sentence.

And a lot of it upsets me because people are so uneducated about geography and things going on in the world. My husband went to a country ending in "stan" and people automatically assumed it was near Iraq and a dangerous spot. It was far from Iraq, and a freaking vacation spot! Yeah he missed us and we missed him, but even when I'd attempt to explain to people where exactly this country was and what the mission was they didn't hear me, 'cause as soon as I said the country name ending in "stan" they turned everything else out.

There are many missions going on in the world, and Iraq is just one of them. I don't see us doing bad things in Iraq, I know bad things happen there, but we are not the enemy there.

I don't see our men and women dying more there than those in the same age group do here in America. Why do people need to openly comment to a military members face or family members face about their feelings on the war? I just don't get it, there are a lot of jobs that people die in, there are a lot of hobbies people die from. And there is a lot more to the military than Iraq and combat.

cordeliabrainiac
I think its stupid. It implies that I chose "the mission." I didn't. I swore to uphold the orders of those appointed over me, it kind of implies that I'll trust their judgement. Which I mostly do. If it was up to me, we wouldn't go to some of the places that we go and we would go to places that we haven't been yet. Darfur, anyone?

People who claim to support the troops but not what they are trying to achieve - are lying (even if to themselves).

How can you 'support the troops' when you are hoping that we are defeated?

It is absoultly true.

What a lot of people do is confuse sympathy for support.

For example: "I support the troops by brining them home"

You don't tell you child before a race, "Your not going to win, but I support you."

The people who "Support the troops but not the war" see us Soldiers as victims of Bush that need to be protected. If thats what they want to believe, then fine, its their right, but don't try to claim you support us, when you denounce what we are doing. Another example, I saw a questioner on here that said he supported the troops by sending food and care packages overseas, but then in the same question, he admitted he unermines recruiting. How is undermining recruiting "supporting the troops."

And I do not believe that a person is un-patriotic just because they do not support the war. Just be honest is all I ask.

Flyflinger
It is just another Liberal smoke and mirror lie to make you think they like our troops when they really loath them.
USMC 66-69 --- I hate Liberals for good reasons. I fought a war against socialist and now we have then here running for president and getting elected to congress.

schazjmd
I think it's inaccurate.

It's BS. You can support the troops without supporting the mission.

J A M A L
I agree with it.
If you think that the principle of defeating the extremist Islamic terrorist group is wrong, then you must think that the people fighting for it are wrong too.
If you disagree with it, think of it this way.
Assassinating Abraham Lincoln is a repulsive action....but I support John Wilkes Booth!!!
IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE, DOES IT?
The quote makes absolute sense, if you think otherwise it's an outrageous assumption that it's possible to support the people that are fighting for this country without supporting the cause.

i think its sneaky coercion. telling people they are unpatriotic by not supporting a war. its unpatriotic to give up freedoms that many fought to give you!(patriot act)...its unpatriotic to allow a president to declare war(war power claus)....these things are unpatriotic. this country was founded on the idea that you may believe in what you want, say what you want, think what you want freely. things like this are cheap shots made by neo-conservatives towards americans. a patriot questions government, a patriot keeps government in check and at a minimum, and a real patriot is offended by these attempts to take away freedom under the illusion that they are saving it.

It is untrue, proven by the fact that just about everyone I know supports the Troops and not the mission.
It is just propaganda

malclave
I think the saying is technically inaccurate, but is a fair response to many (most?) anti-war protests/ protestors.

As devil's advocate... I could accept that they DO have a mission there and support them (sending care packages, letters, etc.), but still disagree with the reasoning behind the mission.

Birthday Persinowitz!
Delusional misleading republican pablum. The troops are one thing the bad mission is republican

Typical, stupid jingoism devised by Bush and Co to justify their corrupt behavior.

"You're either with us or against us" is another good one from Bushie and the boys.

"Dead or Alive" - was another (obviously, neither one applied)

"Mission Accomplished" is another nonsensical twerp-like move by the idiot and his crew.

you do support the poor , do you not
