I was surprised to learn that the government has decided to dump the veteran's day. But I think in the memory of the people of New Zealand it's mainly connected to the big and tragical campaign at Gallipoli. Since I am German I deplore that we don't have something similar, but then again, surely we can be thankful to Kiwis and Aussies too who fought to liberate Europe in the past century. I also think that it would be a mistake to leave all the peace keeping and liberation work to the USA today. Do you see a chance or necessity that we might introduce a worldwide veteran's day of the peace keeping forces, for instance? This would surely help to raise more volunteers for such little liked jobs that nevertheless need to be done.

I am not sure if I understand your question , but as you know Anzac day commemorates the landing at Gallipoli and so there would not be any support in Australia or New Zealand for moving that day. The other day we remember those who have served their country in war is Remembrance day 11th November , which of course is the armistice day for the first world war and that day is already recognised by many countries and could not be moved. |

Gallipoli was tragic for the Turks too you know.
Nobody won much at Gallipoli.
People harp on how the ANZAC's didn't win and yet it was the most successful evacuation ever! The worst was yet to come, that mud in the Somme and Ypres. Pity those Generals didn't know when it was a good idea to retreat and regroup. |
