It's important to remember that all balls are a little different and you need to find out as much as you can beforehand so you can be sure what is appropriate for the particular balls you may be spending time at. they are kind of like a prom with a bunch of drunk old people you don't know. Its nice to mengel and get to shake hands with the chain of command and meet other people but they are any thing but romantic and can be boring. I sugest going just to see and get to know who your significant other works with but its not fun or romantic.
