What are most soldiers in the british army like?

most are crude, rude, and obnoxious. most have no manners, swear at the drop of a hat, and love to drink. other than that, they are by and large, very good soldiers. the ones that i have worked with knew their jobs very well. glad to have them on our side.

They like a joke and a laugh, most soldiers in the British army need to have a banter and a drink to get through the horrors of being in places like Afghanistan, I am really proud of all of them they do a crap job and get paid little for it...and they are the best trained soldiers in the world...should be grateful they are fighting along side you not against you!

you need to remember, when we are over there we have no kit, we are in a very hostile place with no decent equiptment, missing our families and to make it worse have mad abjabs shooting at us all the time.
We are not at all bad, just a little fed up of doing the dirty work for other 'lazier' nations.

Yes they are crude - but you must understand what they do. A foot soldier's job is to kill people - in doing so be more dangerous, more ferocious, more aggressive than anyone they come up against. Their job is to shoot people, blow them up, stab them, decapitate people with an entrenching tool.

I was once asked if I would shoot someone in the back - to which I answered I'd prefer to shoot them when they are asleep. A soldier is not required to be nice, is not required to be fair, is not required to be decent. He is required to kill anyone that would get in the way of his or her mission, or would harm his/her comrades.

Our current politically correct society demands we give the appearance of being nice - that our conflicts have rules and order - thus making the killing acceptable.

Having said that - depending upon where you encountered them - its unlikely they would beat you up - it could lead to charges

Their combat troops are as tough as nails and probably should be considered some of the best soldiers on the planet. Put 100 brits up against 100 soldiers from any other country, give them the same equipment and let them go at it and the brits will win 90% of the time. (All respect to the USMC etc, but they'd get their butts kicked too)

British squaddies are like soldiers the world over. They are young men in a high pressure environment. When you saw them they were doubtless not on the front line but were having a chance for a blow out to unwind. Swearing is something you get used to in the military. Good soldiers are trained to be aggressive but have to keep it in check until it's needed. Combine this with stress and youth, throw in a little boredom and you have a situation waiting to happen. At the end of the day I can't think of anyone that I would rather be in the line with.

they're like soldiers from the average westernized country - cussing, smoking, drinking, but good-hearted, brave, and fighters.
guys/girls from all walks of life - they're just regular people doing a difficult and usually thankless job.

British people have a black sense of humour ( no stereotype)(not all of them), they will swear and make fun of you and try to fool you and so on, they aren't being mean, its just the way some are. i know a British dude , a ex Brit army, he is always swearing and talking like that and thinks the world is stupid, just not himself, he is always trying to fool and trick others, but he is cool about it. when He notices that you can defend yourself and get him the same way back he laughs, its just a game i guess to him lol.

they're doing a thankless job without proper kit, and their families are back home in crap housing. most are low paid. if they still have a sense of humour then thank gawd for that! and if they looked a bit mean, so what? soldiers aren't workers at a funfair. everyday they risk their lives for us, their existence. don't ask them to wear a smile to make you feel better about things. just be grateful they're still there looking after tomorrow.

I agree with you that at first glance they seem a little rough around the edges.....more so than most American military soldiers; however it isn't as bad as you think. Like any other man (or woman) hold your head up high and treat them with respect

They do drink A LOT. The ones that I have worked with drank an incredible amount of alcohol that would put any others to shame. I never really enjoyed drinking with them. It is best to let them do that by themselves.

some comments here are pretty bad...You act like The US have a military full of high intellect, academically advanced, all-times professional attitudes, never swear, never act irrational, never do wrong, always humane to civilians and always courteous...

C'mon, those type of people don't enlist to the army let alone get tours of duty and if they do they are VERY far and few between....

Most enlistments do it to escape the problems that they have in their lives and even more do it to escape poverty...

I am not having a go at the US military or defending the British but there needs to be allowances on cussing and anger...

These men and women are trained to kill and nice people just can't do it...
