The disadvantages are the immense destruction, immediate and Future to the people and the region. I pray that we never HAVE to use them again in a war and that we have the moral and political courage to NOT allow unstable regimes to gain access to them. Opps, Too Late. They're expensive. They won't kill roaches and the land you bomb will be useless for farming, water supply and human habitat years afterward. The roaches won't mind, though.

They are great as a deterrent. Horrible as an actual weapon. They don't discriminate (in a good way). They kill everybody.

The reason a country has them is because they want to keep up with other nuclear powers. They probably avert some wars, but only between nuclear powers and that just means you can't stop a country like North Korea from doing crazy things because they equal you in firepower.
All the wars and 'democratic change' wars are waged against non-nuclear powers. If Russia decided to do something unpleasant, who's going to threaten them and with what? Sanctions?
