The most Victoria Cross medals won in one single battle was at Rorke's Drift during the Boer War in 1879, when 11 VC's were awarded.
This action at Rorke's Drift ocurred on Wednesday 22- Thursday 23 January, 1879, when some 150 soldiers British Soldiers defended a supply station against some 4000 Zulus.
The film Zulu starring Michael Caine is based on these events.
During the Korean War the Gloucestershire Regiment became the only British Army Regiment to be awarded the United States Distinguished Unit Citation by the US President, the regiment also gained the nickname "The Glorious Glosters", for their heroic last stand against overwhelming Chinese forces at what is now known as Gloster Hill during the Battle of the Imjin River (Korea) in 1951. The Glosters were also awarded the South Korean Distinguished Unit Citation by the Korean President.
According to a memorandum presented to the British cabinet on 26 June 1951, 29th Brigade of the British Army suffered 1,091 casualties during the Battle of the Imjin River.
These casualties represented 20 to 25 per cent of the brigade’s strength on the eve of battle. Of the 1091 soldiers killed, wounded or missing, 620 were from the Gloucestershire Regiment.
Four VC's were awarded during the Korean War - http://www.stephen-stratford.co.uk/korea_vcs.htm |

There was an 18 year old kid who jumped on a grenade that made it's way into his Humvee in Iraq. Not too many people would have done that. He saved every one else.

The others have given very good answers and looking up the MOH site (below) is a great reminder of our heroes. That said, I have to tell this short joke.
Army and Marine generals and a Navy Admiral are discussing bravery and the Army general says he'll demonstrate bravery. He orders a private upstairs to the roof of a two story building and orders him to jump. The private salutes and jumps. The Marine general scoffs at him and orders a Marine to the top of a three story building and the story repeats itself. The admiral tells them to observe carefully and orders a sailor to the top of a five story building and tells him to jump. The sailor looks down and says... "What are you, an idiot!" At this point the admiral explains to the generals that is real bravery. Sorry I know, old joke!
Check out the site below!
Cathy B, I had to return and ask if Cathy B and others of like mind can even fathom the notion that wars always have a good guy and a bad guy. These "anti-war" types are rarely anti-war, I know having attended many rallies. They are usually anti-American. Would they have you believe that the right answer to WWII was to not join the allies in opposing Hitler? Unfortunately many would say that. I was once told by a protester that even the Civil War wasn't worth fighting and had we just waited the civil rights movement would have freed the slaves. The ignorance of some astounds me!
Livvinrussia is refering to SGT (not captain) Alvin York of the 82d Infantry Division. This is the unit that later became the storied 82D Airborne Division! |

I have always liked the part of the movie, Spartacus, during the slave rebellion, in which they were looking for Spartacus, to punish him...all of his comrades stood, one by one, saying, 'I am Spartacus"
Greater love hath no man but this; that he lay down his life for his friends.
Jesus the Messiah laid His life down for all of us, in the war between life and death, against good and evil. The scripture says that rarely will one man die for another, but for a good man,one may dare to die...
I also underline the Medal of Honor recipients, many of which are awarded post humously. God bless our heroes. These awards do not come easily. Freedom is not cheap. |

Participating in killing of other human beings is not brave. So I would say that antiwar protesters do the bravest acts in war by trying to stop the atrocity. |
