It means you are promoted to E-2 after basic.
E-3 after Tech School or 20 weeks, which ever comes first.
You will be promoted to E-4 from 3 to 6 months faster than those who enlisted as an E-1
You won't be treated any different than an E-1 though at your duty assignment.
E-1,2 and 3;s are all treated the same. All will get the extra details to do like mowing grass, bay orderly, picking up trash, etc.
It does mean you have to wait longer to reenlist, and reenlistments are when the AF pays the bonus's.
It basicly comes down to, :
If you think you might wanna make the AF a career, go 6 years.
If you think you will leave after your enlistment for college, go 4 years |

In addition to becoming an E3 quicker by taking the 6 year route, signing bonuses are greater for some AFSC's if you enlist for 6 years as opposed to 4 years. . . for an example, security forces. I'm not certain of all the jobs that have signing bonuses. Ask your local recruiter. |

when you sign up for 6 years you will be a E-3 after graduation from tech school. instead of waiting like a year to make rank. do the 6 years , its worth it. |

4 years active you go e-1, e-2, e-3, and so on...
6 years active you go e-1, e-3, e-4, and so on...
I'm doing 6 years active duty, so I will be skipping from e-1 to e-3.
When you enlist you automatically enlist for 8 years total. I'm doing 6 years active, 2 reserve. Who knows I might even stay in longer. :)
You would have a hard time getting a contract for 2 years active duty just so you know.

From what I have been told, whether you sign 4, 6, or 8 it doesn't matter because they are all 8 year contracts. Once your active duty is done you have inactive duty which ends up adding up to 8 years in the end. |
