What are the chances of becoming a SEAL if I attend the Naval Academy?
|
I want to attend the United States Naval Academy after I graduate high school. I am currently 16 and I was wondering what are the chances of becoming a Navy SEAL after 4 years at the academy as to enlisting out of high school. I know the difference between and officer and an enlisted sailor but how does it work with the SEALs. Thanks

Slim,
Last I heard around 27 Academy cadets each year get slots for Bud/s.
So thats 27 out of a class of 800.
Academy graduates choose thier jobs based on class rank.
IE: the top graduate, gets first choice in what they want to do.
On down the line, to the last graduate.
There are only so many slots available for each job.
Once they are gone, you have to choose something else.
And right now Seals are one of the top choices,
So you would have to be in the top 10% of your class, to have a real chance at getting one of those slots. |

Probably about the same as if you entered the Navy by some other route. You'll still have to qualify. Officers, regardless of rank or route, train right alongside the enlisted guys. They sweat, bleed, hurt, and drop out just like most of the others. I'd say your chances are about 1 in 10, maybe 1 in 20. That's about the attrition rate across the board.
Even through the Academy, everything you'll have encountered will be geared so you'll succeed if you can... school, your job, the Scouts, and the Academy, When you get to BUD/S that stops. Everything you'll encounter until you get your Trident is geared to make you fail and to quit.... and they're very good at it. |

I love the misinformation. It's ok. It adds to the legend.
Training "6 months." A WAG that's way off the mark.
Need to be "physically fit and take orders," or "hack Annapolis." That's what the Academy trains you to do. Some people have no idea what SEAL training is.
The only one who posted correctly and who gets my thumbs up is the one who told it like it is. "I'd say your chances are about 1 in 10, maybe 1 in 20. That's about the attrition rate across the board." Annapolis is, as he said, geared for you to make it. The intent of SEAL training is to make you quit, to fail, to drop out, when nothing's on the line but your self esteem. |

The Naval Academy prepares you to have a political job in the military. Your graduation says nothing about your physical and mental toughness. |

The odds are long because so many men, officers and enlisted, want to be Seals. But if you don’t apply, you have no chance at all. The Seals don’t “draft” their people, so they won’t come looking for you.
If you want to be a Seal, you must be in superb physical condition and be emotionally tough as nails. The instructors will do everything they can to break you down and get you to quit, and they succeed a very high percentage of the time. They want the best of the best.
You should try to talk to a Seal and find out what it’s really like. Otherwise, you may waste a lot of time and effort.
Bear in mind that Seal training is a six month ordeal |

Do you mean if it would help you become1?Commissioned and enlisted get treated the same in BUD/s.Officers don't get special treatment their.Going to school doesn't mean you are mentally tough to become a SEAL. |

I know several navy seals and you do have a chance if you are very physically fit and can take orders. |

they are actually not too bad...in the beginning of your senior year, or maybe the end of the junior year, they do what they call service selection...you get to list 3 choices for what you want to do when you graduate...then according to class rank and how many slots there are for each choice they start down the list and assign specialities...so, if your class rank is pretty high you would stand a pretty good chance of at least getting to go to BUD/S...then it would be up to you whether you made it or not...but academy grads make it thru at a much higher rate than any other group. |
