Now days, high considering the war.
I don't believe some of these responses!!
Same as daily living?!!!
Why're these people not being honest?!
DON'T EVER get advise from right wing fanatics.
They're full of hot air!
Also, it's not only matter of dying.
PTSD, is common among solders. Some end up committing suicides or having a long life affect for that matter.
One should face the facts before joining.

STOP LYING and MISLEADING PEOPLE.
NOTE: It is so hilarious that, some potato heads think, not joining the army is a cowardly act. Not that, one may have a problem believing the system or Gov. for that matter!
These kinds are so wrapped up in "Rambo" movies or crap like that!!!! It's just too hilarious of the way they think!
Complete brain washed! |

It depends on your job. I hear that flight deck jobs on aircraft carriers are pretty dangerous. You could be a corpsman and see combat in Iraq. Or you could be a desk jockey. |

The most dangerous assignments would be regimental combat team, which is rotated among all regiments, and the special warfare community, which is open to only a select few. |

A lot less then if you were a Marine! |

During my 20 years in, I only saw ONE death in the line of normal duty, and that was onboard a carrier. The other three were each due to the person's own misconduct in an off-duty situation. I served onboard an Oiler, an Ammo-ship, a Minesweeper, an Aircraft carrier, and a torpedo test-craft. My brother, who was in the seals, can speak to THAT communities casualty situation, but THEY are in a completely different world than shipboard sailors. Select "Ignore" on those that claim that the truth isn't being told, and imply that you are in teriffic danger every day all the time. Yes, there are dangers, but a lot of the specific dangers one faces depend completely on one's job-asignment and location, the rest depends on your own capabilities and how well you have learned. Honestly, I have seen more death with my own eyes on the roadways than in the service. |

The same as if you didn't.
You have a chance of dying every day anywhere doing anything. |

If you're on shore duty in the U.S., it's pretty much the same as anyone else, unless you're working in an industrial or shipyard environment, which can be quite dangerous. Duty aboard ship can be a different matter. Shipboard duty has many inherent dangers. There is always the danger of fire, which can be very dangerous since most ships carry large amounts of fuel and explosive ordnance. If the ship has aircraft operating onboard, then there are more dangers such as fire, ordnance incidents / explosions , and crashes. |

We are all "just one heartbeat from eternity", so as long as you are alive go for it, life I mean.
If you are thinking about this, joining navy, and you can't get past the 'dying' bit, it just ain't for you.
Don't get to 80, and regret not taking life by the hand and running. |

For a girl, almost nonexistent... at least on the job.
For a guy, only slightly higher. Carelessness tends to play a major factor in a lot of Navy accidents. As the guy from a carrier noted... walking into a spinning prop... or having one run into you can get messy. Plying with pyrotechnics has had some pretty serious consequences.
I've been aboard subs and carriers and felt just as safe on one as on the other. Well, my first time on the carrier, I did ding my shins on the watertight doors... but that wasn't fatal.
When I was in boot camp, they had people from specialty areas check out recruits who showed some aptitude in their particular area. I went to a couple of these. One guy looked at me for a minute and then asked, "Do you want to die for your country?" I can remember the question, but can't remember my answer exactly, but it started out, "If this recruit understands the question, I joined the Navy to serve my country. If in that service I am required to give my life, I will do so." Then it gets a little fuzzy... but the gist of it was, "but it's not the first thing on my list of things to do tomorrow morning." One lady serving in Iraq said to a guy who said to die as a Marine would be honorable, "No. If you die, you're dead... period. To live like a Marine is honorable. To fight and die if necessary is your job as a Marine. To take as many of the enemy with you as you can is to do your job like a Marine." She was a pilot.
EDIT:
"You asked for it"... asked for it. You'll note the references are all media except for the Marine link which talks about training. Her goal, according to her profile is the truth. She wouldn't know the truth if it bit her on her... |

If you pay attention during training and when you are doing your job, your chances are about the same as they are in civilian life. But then again, if don't pay attention as a civilian, you increase your chances of dying just by crossing the street.
Even other branches of the military that are in combat don't have much higher death rate. Think of all the soldiers and Marines that have been in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, compared to how many actually have been killed. Compared to most other wars, the casualty rate is very, very low.
Go Blue Fan! - I gave you a thumbs down, and I'm no coward. I served in the Navy. How about you? To afraid to serve your country? |

it depends on your job lets say you on the flightdeck of an carrier or work around aircraft with props and around jet enginesas long as you have head is clear and loooking around you be ok |
|

man_marathon
|
very slight, you are not in harms way like the army or marines |
|

Joshua C
 |
not very high if your on a ship..the only way it to sink or get blown up then sink...its not like they have bank robberies or homicide on a Navy ship |
|

Denise S
 |
It depends on your job. If you're working on a flight line or flight deck, your chances are probably a little bit more elevated than someone who works on the signal bridge. If you get attached to an Army unit in Iraq, your chances go up. Then again, you could get killed crossing the street tomorrow, the odds are probably better for that overall.
There's no big, bad military lie. The numbers you people are quoting are mostly soldiers and Marines, not sailors. There are fewer Navy personnel dead than any other branch of service in OEF/OIF. |
|

Your name here, cheap.
|
People die every day. I f you are chosing a branck of service on fear of your life, maybe it is best you stay home. |

you stand a better chance dieing if you move to New York city or Washington DC or Chicago
If that is your goal.
As a Navy Vet, I didn't have time to think of dieing. They keep you too damn busy.
Honestly, even in the crap, you were to concerned with what you are doing than to be having those thoughts. |

There've been many casualties.
And as this poster(acco5) is stating, why these people are trying to lie! I WONDER WHY!

Just about the same as driving your car everyday. Slim to none. Just make sure that you can swim. lol That's not a fair question though, any branch of the military cannot tell you what your chances are of dying. It's just not plausible |

Very slim, aggravatingly stringent safety precautions are in place.
You sometimes may have to try to hurt yourself. But dying, almost 'nill unless your a SEAL. |

Don't join the military if you are afraid of dying plain and simple. There is a chance something could happen to anyone in any branch of the service. |
