Andy gave you a good answer. The Seabees were born in WWII, and have proliferated into the "Cad Do" professionals they are today.
I spent 18 years in the Seabees, and have built stuff all over the world, and would go back in a heartbeat to a forward deployed battalion, or air detachment. |

Construction Men.
They are usually among the first into combat along with Marines and Army infantry. They specialize in everything from wood, electrical, masonry, large equipment machines, and plumbing.
They basically build all the facilities that we use overseas and abroad. Mostly for the Navy and Marine corp. The Air Force and Army have their own construction brigades as well. I believe the Air Force calls it "Red Horse". It's a tougher job than most other Navy rates and there's a lot of pride in that field. It can sometimes be considered as a separate branch from the Navy.
**EDIT** Also, they are instrumental in disasters and aid programs. During Katrina the SeaBees were dispatched to help clean up the mess, rebuild homes, build facilities for the victims and repair electrical and plumbing systems.
I imagine that anyone would be very proud to serve in a SeaBee unit. It would be a good choice if you're considering it. |
