What are the pro's and con's of the Navy Nuke Program?
Find answers to your legal question.

What are the pro's and con's of the Navy Nuke Program?

I'm joining the Navy in January (doing the 15 units deal) and i'm trying to decide between the SEALs and the Nuke program. I need more info on the nuke program from someone who isn't just trying to get my signature. Like, where do they train and for how long, what do they do specifically inside the plants and subs, what kind of pay would i be looking at, what kind of jobs could i expect to qualify for after my 6 years, will i be able to have a family stateside and actually be able to see them, what kind of stuff should i study, etc. Anything and everything.

And please, no critics. I qualify, I'm smart enough, i have the drive, i want a future in the military. Enough of that.

Navy Mom and proud
This message is to Aye Bee See, I'm guessing that you may have tried but failed at becoming a military member. I am proud that my son has chosen the Navy (he too will be a Nuke guy). He is a wonderful, smart, energetic and amazing young man. AND he will be the one defending YOUR life, so you won't be killed. I don't know where you get your information regarding our country being a compete failure and joke, I guess you must know people in some pretty high places to have that information. I have so much respect for all the military and what they have done and continue to do for our country. So don't get on this site and start bashing the military until you, yourself, has done it. Peace!!

I R Nuke;
Ok so Moke was mostly correct. Some things that he got wrong. Training is set in Charleston, SC for "A" School(4-6mos). It is fast paced and you will be busy most of the time either meeting military or training requirements. Power School is also in Charleston, SC (6mos)(all of this is really in a little suburb called Goose Creek but that's just at technicality). After "A" School and Power School you will go to prototype.
Prototype is an actual real honest to god nuclear power plant either in the Cooper river in the form of a mostly retired submarine, or just outside Ballston Spa, NY‎. You will spend six months here and this is where most people look fondly back at when they are looking back at the training "pipe line."
As far as being a Nuke goes the possibilities are good when you get out. If nothing else (I am heading out in Aug) you will walk away with 60-80 college level credits, 6 years of job experience, and possibly some of the best friends you will ever make. Leaving I had three job offers that were unsolicited eg. I didn't even have to apply they found me.
If you would like more details about the nuclear program please feel free to contact me I'll tell you a bit more about the rates and what they do on subs and surface.

EDIT:
FYI There are more wavers in the Nuclear Power Program than any other program that I have seen. I served with a guy who had a waiver for having too many waivers.

The Navy Nuke program is an excellent one. The training takes place near Idaho Falls. Not sure of the length, but probably at least six months. The program is first rate.

The thing about entering the Nuke program is to know that it is very structured. You learn all about the power plant and you will be very qualified to work at any power plant in the USA. You would probably be assigned to a nuke sub or surface ship upon graduation.

This program will set you up for life.

As far as Navy Seals go, their attrition rate is very high during the training period. It is a macho pursuit and very rewarding personally. It requires a lot of hard work.

Your call.

when you say 15 units.. Do you mean you have a GED and are getting the college credits? If so you may not even qualify for Nuke or SW at all.. I am pretty sure you must be a HS grad for either and waivers are nonexistent for either program.

pay is the same no matter what your rating is. what kind of job you get afterward will depend on what you do to market yourself.

Nuke schoiol is in Charleston South Carolina with C schools in a few locations, like Ballston Spa. SeALs train at Coronado. both are upowards of 2 years long with failure rates approaching 80%.

My answer would be, if you are serious about joining the US Military, just to kill yourself, for three logical and well thought out reasons. One, statistically speaking, chances are you're going to die in the Military. Two, why risk your life fighting for a country which is regarded by the rest of the world as a complete failure and joke? In a few days we'll hit the 13 trillion dollars of debt benchmark. Lastly, why waste six years of your one life training to die? You only have one chance on earth, don't waste it doing military bull.

Think about it.

I am currently sworn in and on delayed enlistment for the nuke progam, an based on my line scores im anticipating ET. I am a junior in college set up for a degree asap when i am complete with power school. I also will be forth generation navy trying (not confident) to continue on the legacy of graduating top of what ever training my family has received from the navy. At this point I have an overwhelming desire to serve my country (something about being young and invincible), but i have to say aye bee see's reply was bar none the best comment here. something about blind ignorance and borderline rage coupled with the unwavering and uninformed preconceived notions, is enough to make my day. A very strong belief of mine is that a man only claims the impossible when he completely lacks the intellect to even begin to understand the thing that he claims to be impossible. and i believe that Aye Bee See runs into this on a daily bases
