The reasons can be as varied as the individual. Mostly, I hope it is a desire to be of service to our country. |

I don't know about the Army, but I joined the Marines because I love my country, I wanted the college money, and I wanted to see some of the world. I went to 15 countries in 6 years, and served 2 combat tours. If I hadn't gotten into a car accident, I'd be there today. I loved serving, and I loved the camaraderie. That's why I joined.
EDIT: And for younglady600, you're right, I wasn't in the top 10% of my high school class. I was in the top 5%. |

Like the people before said it's a great career option, and the reasons are varied. But if you are looking for personal reasons I joined because I'm proud of my country and am proud to serve. |

A good question but I think most people join for the pay, a place where your are fed and housed a chance to travel. I am not sure that is to protect you family and country. I was in the army as it was then called conscription and did 2 years and I am sure it did me a lot of good. Discipline is sadly lacking in all society's over the world. |

loyalty, pride, wanting to protect people (the country, their family), education, medical, training for their career, future career, help with home, extra hazard pay, retirement, re-up money, lower medical cost for their family. |

Some people in this country actually realize there are responsibilities that go along with those rights. Some choose to acknowledge those responsibilities by offering themselves for military service.
But don't look for any liberals to notice it. It simply isn't in their make-up. They are takers pure and simple.
During my 22 years of active duty I actually met a few liberals. All but one or two said they had made a mistake. They had joined for the education and didn't realize they would have to actually do something to earn it. |

A matter of tradition. A matter of loyalty. A matter of honor. A matter of pride.
Most of the men in my family, except for 1 brother & 1 uncle, all the way back to WWI, have served in the military. It is family tradition, it is something of an honor. Our country is free because of the choices these men & women have made.
I would not agree with the answer of money, or pay. I think the salary we pay our troops is pathetic. The GI bill is good for education. The medical plan is good, housing is a given, the VA program on mortgages is a nice perk. Travel, yes, it can be nice. The chance to improve who you are as a person...some who join may find the dicipline & structure of the military actually give them a better foundation.
Over all, I think it is a very personal choice, in today's world, since it is strictly volunteer. There are many reason's one join's the military.
And I'd like to THANK each & every single one of them for the choice they have made. For their service, dedication & sacrifice to our country. |

Well being Ex-Army I can give you plenty of reason but I will give you a few to defend there country for one,to have a purpose and direction in there lives another, maturity, travel, education I can go on but you get the idea.
And there are more and they come from the individuals that join from all over the country like leaving a bad situation at home or the neighborhood before it get worst and some because they just want to is that too hard to believe if so well it is not some of us just love our country and wanted to serve like I. |

my husband decided to join, we are giving up a good paying job, selling our new house and ready to sacrifice for our country, sounds crazy to us sometimes, but it feels right, something he always wanted and I think we are finally mature enough to handle it. I admire those who do and a few years ago I didn't think we had what it takes, hope we do now. |

Depends on where you come from. If one is poor, a career and money for college are available. If middle class or even wealthy one could find adventure and a challenge in the Army. But everyone no matter where they are from gets pride out of being in the Army. |

The number one answer should be. Proud of their country and their flag. It is the greatest country on earth. True it has faults. Without those willing to join the military we might not be free. You have the freedom to make changes. You can protest , have freedom of speech, go where you want to without fear of reprisal. Other reasons are money and education. |

There are quite a few reasons why someone would join:
1. Education Benefits
2. Training for a Job
3. To use as a reference after they get out
4. To make money
5. To serve their county
6. Benefits after they either Retire or ETS
7. They are forced to do so between that or prison
And a few others. This website has 10 reasons (some I have mentioned)
http://www.diversityworking.com/career/Military/Alabama_jobs/story/101.html
Again there are probably more reasons and some very personal why they joined. I know my husband joined to get a little more money but he has stayed in because he likes what it means to be a soldier. |

I am proud of the 8years I served in the Army. It is a great place for any young man to start out. It gives you time to grow up and figure out what you want to do with your life. It's to bad some of these people don't realize the sacrifices people make so they can be idiots. |

OK, i know im old but i only left 4 years ago having served 24 years - but i wont tell you the reason i joined as you only want to know the modern day.
the guys i were in charge of had the usual varied reasons ranging from:
parents kicked them out
come from a military family
to see the world
didnt want to be a nobody like their friends stuck in a dead-end job never having left the village they lived in
but the main and common reason was:
they wanted a trade quicker - most only had to sign on for 3-6 years to get the trade they wanted, and it was quicker than going to college in civvy street, plus they were being paid whilst they learnt
patriotism and shooting someone never came into it |

Most of the answers you already have here say about all of it . All I can add is that Johnny Reb is apparently a goof without a clue. I wonder about the guy above me. |

My ex joined because he didn't know what he to do with his life and wanted to appear to others as a "hero". In actuality, he's not truly interested in serving anyone but himself. He's in Iraq now. I'm slightly interested to know how he doing since survival also depends on camaraderie. He used to talk so negatively about everyone in basic training calling them all idiots etc...
But he enjoyed the attention he got when he told everyone he enlisted. |

To help destroy the enemy. Those in the middle east and afghanistan who choose to force their medieval beliefs upon the unwilling. Those who would hope to bring death, destruction and misery to the western allies. Those who pose a threat to our freedom and way of life, they must be destroyed, before they destroy us.
Freedom isnt free. |

for many young people like i was its a way of becoming an adult very quickly and learning to live, for some its a tradition for some an escape and for others who knows.
but all that said once your out in the big bad battlefield its for you mates, the guys and girls stood by your side. theres no such thing as queen and country anymore.
they do nothing for servicemen so why should we do it for them. |

To serve the greater good. To protect the future of freedom in the world. To defend our way of life. To insure there will be a free country for our children.
Pay, housing, education money, all come a distant third.

I always wanted to be one, it had nothing to do with love of my country although I am sure if I really thought about it, it would have had some influence, i just wanted to do something different, i knew i could always go back to working in a factory like i do now, it was fun both the good times and the bad ones, it gave me the confidence to move on with my life." a life less ordinary" |

if you join the service with a fairly good education and a will to advance you will find a great life and a carreer and promotion will take you to unknown heights but of course the downside is you know your in there to fight should the occasion arise but it makes you a real person and if your a sporty guy its there for the taking |

have you tryed geting a job in the UK,the armed sevices at least can offer a carreer,ok so you might get killed while serving, but we have to die sometime |
